NFL, union officials meet, discuss longer season (more revenue)
NEW YORK – NFL and union officials discussed adding two games to the regular season when they met Wednesday for their first negotiating session since February.

Teams would still play a total of 20 exhibition plus regular-season games under the proposal. The league would go from four in the preseason and 16 in the regular season to two and 18.

"This is an idea that is really gaining momentum, particularly with the owners," Green Bay Packers president Mark Murphy said on a conference call.

The current collective bargaining agreement expires in March, which could lead to a work stoppage during the 2011 season....

The potential for long-term health problems is already too great for the players.

Doesn't that pretty well sum it up?

3. It doesn't make any sense
Well yeah revenue but the system is set up perfectly and evenly.

4 teams from a division in-conference
4 teams from a division out of conference
3 teams based on last year's division rank meaning the Cardinals who won the NFC West play division winners Cowboys, Vikings, and Saints.
6 games against own a division by playing each team twice.

Adding another game or two would fuck that up unless you add more teams.

4. That's 17 games.

Only 2 games are played based on last year's division rank. Add 2 more games and it changes from 2 mis-matched games to one full division.

9. Trust me I know
The Cardinals play the NFC South this year because they played the NFC North last year. The year before that they played the NFC East. So the division winner Saints is the #1 team they played.

Point is, I covered that by mentioning the 4 teams from one division (NFC South) in conference they got scheduled this year. I was in a hurry and I left my house right after that post. I just returned home. :)

4 teams from a division in-conference
4 teams from a division out of conference
4 teams from a division either in or out of conference
6 games in your division.

Everyone in a division gets the exact same opponents. No more of one team in the conference getting 3 tough opponents and another other getting the dregs.

If they do this, though, they'll have to increase the roster sizes.

6. Increase the roster size to expect more injuries and earlier retirements,
achieving greater parity among teams in the process.

If it didn't mean this hughee99 I would be all for it. The human body can only take so much punishment.

8. I agree, but as far as scheduling goes, it would make things easier
No more unbalanced schedules within a division.

If they were to do this, that's why they'd have to expand the roster. You'd see even more RB by committee, more starts getting pulled with the game in hand (and probably more comebacks) and players resting at the end of the season.

11. Fact is, the players already play 20 games a season.
Making more of those games count doesn't sound like such a bad idea. I would opine that the best move is simply to reduce the preseason, reducing the amount of actual games the players play, which would extend their careers. But when there's an opportunity to increase revenue, we can pretty much guess how a small group of very wealthy people will move.

12. Actually, the regulars don't play as much in the four pre-season games.
This will likely increase their playing time considerably, possible turning aggravating injuries into something more major as the season goes on.

There's no reason to play them.

But yes, eliminating pre-season is a good way to accomplish this without having the season go too far into Feb.

If they get rid of the bye week for each team and extend the season one week earlier that would work!

18. Unless the owners stiff the Players Union, it'll happen
It'll hurt football too, IMO.

Best bet would be to eliminate two exhibition games and start the season two weeks earlier. But that would cost owners money and make too much sense, so forget it.
