Marlins fire Fredi Gonzalez; name Edwin Rodriguez interim manager

The Florida Marlins this morning dismissed manager Fredi Gonzalez and named Triple A skipper Edwin Rodriguez as interim manager.

Bench coach Carlos Tosca and hitting coach Jim Presley were also let go, replaced by two coaches in the Marlins' minor-league organization.

Brandon Hyde takes over as bench coach and John Mallee as hitting coach, both on an interim basis, the club said in a news release.

Gonzalez was 276-279 in three-plus seasons with the Marlins, including 34-36 this year after Tuesday night's victory against the Baltimore Orioles. Hired to replace Joe Girardi after 2006, he recorded two winning seasons in Florida, 2008 and '09.

1. pretty shocking

I actually remember the Baltimore series last year being the turning point for the Marlins. We swept them last year to get to .500 and then competed with the Phillies the rest of the way.

I'm guessing the rift between Gonzalez and the players was bigger than they were letting on.
