Henrik Sedin Named NHL MVP
Henrik Sedin wrecked Alex Ovechkin's bid for an NHL MVP three-peat.

The Vancouver Canucks star, who had a league-best 83 assists, captured the Hart Trophy on Wednesday night during the NHL's awards ceremony in Las Vegas. Ovechkin, the captain of the Washington Capitals, had to settle for runner-up status after taking home the prize each of the last two years.

"It's a strange feeling," Sedin said. "I'm very proud, so its a great honor."

Sedin received 46 of 133 first-place votes, Ovechkin was second with 40 and Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby finished third with 20. Sedin had 894 total points compared with 834 for Ovechkin.

2. Duncan Keith of the Chicago Blackhawks won the Norris Trophy as hockey's top defenseman.
So Duncan Keith has a little something to keep forever, given that nobody gets to keep the Stanley Cup. Also, given that the Blackhawks traded away Dustin Byfuglien, Ben Eager, and Brent Sopel (!), I think it's unlikely we'll hang on to the thing more than one season.

I loved Dustin Byfuglien. One of my favorite Hawks.

5. I have to say that this trade leaves me a little baffled.
Maybe they know something we don't, but on the surface it looks like they just dumped two heart of the team type guys in Byfuglien and Eager.

Congrats to Kieth though. What a great year he had.

6. I can see letting Ben Eager and Brent Sopel go.
There are lots of talented young guys in the organization, including a defenseman they say could have made the team last season if only there was roster room. There is a need for the team to shed salary. I get that. But Buff? Dustin Byfuglien was a consistent contributor and good power forwards don't grow on trees. I'd much rather have seen Marion Hossa go (not that he isn't good), as Hossa is making some $7.9 million a year. I saw Buff as part of the young core we ought to keep. Amd who'd we get? Marty Reasoner? Who?

Yikes.

8. Listening to Chicago sports radio today revealed they did know something we didn't.
Or rather, something we perhaps forgot. Dustin Byfuglien is notorious for showing up to camp overweight. He doesn't take care of himself in the offseason and as a consequence isn't terribly productive until, say, January. They have problems with Buff's off-ice attitude. This, combined with their salary-cap issues, explains why the Hawks said goodbye to Dustin Byfuglien.
