Dean Smith is so jealous with the FIFA soccer championship.
They have taken his four corners Offense and perfected it! Or did Dean Smith perfect Soccer's four corner offense.

Either way, they are both offensive to REAL sports.

2. Damn, Upton! You are a real lightweight when it comes to insulting people!
Maybe you need to rub a bit of barroid's cream that you have stashed away in bedroom on your head.

3. Listen up Francis, Dean only resorted to the Four Corners when he didn't have any decent athletes
Hence his use of it when he had Sam Perkins, James Worthy and Michael Jordan on the same damn team.

4. I was at the '82 ACC tournament final.
Terry Holland would not allow his players to come out of their zone, preferring to keep the 7' 4" Ralph Sampson down low, and pack in everyone else. What kind of fucking idot would try to go to the hoop in that instance? If UVA wanted to play, all they had to do so was come out and play. The Heels had the lead, UVA sat back, and by the way, we won the game and the NCAA that year.
Yeah, Dean Smith was a real dummy..

5. Only a fucking idiot thinks Jordan. Worthy and/or Perkins couldn't score against Sampson
Who else was on the team?

Jeff Lamp?

Puuhleeze

Bobby Knight won the championship the year before.

Smart man? Absolutely.

Decent man? Debatable.

6. UVA finished 30-4 that year. Why the Hell should Dean let them dictate the pace of play ...
when he had the lead and the players to enforce his will? Holland elected not to play, Holland lost. But you're probably right, Dean was a fucking idiot. (Although it's funny, I visited the Basketball Hall of Fame a couple of years ago. Dean is enshrined there. You aren't.)

And don't forget Jeff Jones. (I just remember him because I played against him in a rec league.)

7. Did the team that took UVA out of the NCAA Tourney resort to Four Corners?
I don't remember and I'm too much of a fucking idiot to look it up.

Regardless, did the team that took UVA out have as much talent as UNC that year?

Big Game James & MJ on the same squad.

And they still only won because Fred Brown had a brain fart.

8. Nope. UAB knocked them out, and UVA didn't sit back in a zone the whole game.
No need for UAB to spread the floor.

And I love the Fred Brown bullshit, because everybody just KNOWS that Georgetown would have scored on that possession otherwise, right?

9. So a team with Jordan & Worthy & Perkins can't beat a team that can't beat UAB?
And Dean Smith is a fucking genius?

Without Googling, I'm not sure how many people here would even know that UAB stands for University of Alaska Burbank.

10. Uh, Carolina DID beat UVA, genius. And UAB stands for University of Alabama, Birmingham.
And if you can't acknowledge that Dean Smith was indeed a genius among basketball coaches, then you are a waste of time, bandwidth, and quite probably skin.
Shit, I thought this was the sports forum. I'll head back to GD where at least they know what the fuck they're talking about.

11. If you can't acknowledge that putting the shackles on Jordan & Worthy is a crime against nature
You have no soul.

Your blood bleeds blue doesn't it?

12. I'm sorry..
But I have no fucking idea what taterguy is trying to say.

All I will say is that the four corners offense that Dean Smith "perfected" was an offense to the game of basketball.

Please stay around!

:hi:

13. Yeah, nobody but Carolina fans much liked it.
Few people know that Dean initially called it "Four to Score", and with Phil Ford running the offense, it was virtually unstoppable. Taterguy is hung up on the '82 ACC championship game, but I was in Greensboro for the final, and Terry Holland refused to allow his players to come out of their zone and play man to man. Carolina had the ball and the lead, and Dean said, "Fuck you, Terry, you aren't dictating the pace for this game." Since we won, I'm guessing he was vindicated (for everyone but taterguy, who still seems to feel that Terry "I'm afraid to run with the Heels" Holland was somehow cheated).

14. Terry Holland wasn't cheated. The Game was cheated.
1982 ACC Tourney Finals: 15,000 people paying $500 per ticket*. Millions more watching on TV. Just to watch some guys stand around?

As for vindication, the rule was changed largely so it would never happen again.

And somewhat seriously, this is part of what's wrong with society in general: As long as 'our guy' does something, it's ok, no matter what he does.

There are plenty of noble things about Dean Smith. He did far more for the betterment of society than I ever will.

But Four Corners was not one of those things.

Anyone who claims otherwise isn't being true, to themselves or others.

*Ticket price just a guess based on the average amount you had to contribute to a school's athletic department for the privilege of buying ACC Tourney tickets. At the time, it was a hot item.

21. Once again, being right on one issue does not mean that you're right on all issues
The topic of this thread is Four Corners.

Is it a good thing or a bad thing?

A simple yes or no will suffice.

Unless you're too blinded by Carolina Blue colored glasses to answer.
