Cowboy's Dez Bryant: emerging douchebag?
espnDallas.com / July 26th, 2010

SAN ANTONIO -- Receiver Dez Bryant has done everything right on the field during the first two days of Dallas Cowboys training camp, but he refuses to participate in an NFL rite of passage.

According to the rookie first-round pick, Roy Williams and the other veteran receivers can carry their own shoulder pads after practice.

Williams gave his pads to Bryant after Sunday's morning practice, but Bryant declined to carry them. Williams threatened to go to "step two" when talking to reporters. "I'm not doing it," Bryant said. "I feel like I was drafted to play football, not carry another player's pads."

SNIP

It's a common duty for rookies, who typically get some sort of hazing. Bill Parcells used to make first-round picks bring him water during breaks in practice. The Cowboys' rookie offensive linemen are given awful haircuts by the veterans at some point during each training camp.

Bryant... carry the pads. It's no big deal.

2. I despise hazing rituals,
but it comes with the territory when you join certain groups like fraternities and football teams. It won't kill Bryant to carry a pad.

3. So do I, but it wouldn't kill Roy Williams to catch a pass.

4. Dez Bryant Should Pay His Dues Just Like Everyone Else
Like it or not, it is all about being part of the team.

5. I was about to post this to give Mad a hard time--
but my team has Brandon Marshall so I thought I'd be careful to make fun.

It's just another prima donna receiver in the NFL.

8. I think that is a prerequisite for being a receiver in the nfl.

7. HMMMM. Tough one here...

I see both sides of this...

The rookie should take a bit of hazing, but if the 'hazer' is Roy Williams, well, that changes everything.

As a life long Lions fan I can attest to the fact the Roy is a larger douchebag than most...

We absolutely raped the cowboys in that trade.

Got rid of a soft, lazy ego maniac and got 3 draft picks, one a first rounder.

Fuck Roy. I seen him quit many times....

9. I wouldn't call him a douchebag over this
He is 100% correct. Vets can carry their own pads.

12. BREAKING: Bryant "didn't know rookie traditions"
July 27, 2010

SAN ANTONIO -- Dallas Cowboys rookie wide receiver Dez Bryant said he didn't know about the tradition of carrying a veteran's shoulder pads, and said Tuesday that he will take care of the matter.

Speaking to reporters while he signed autographs following Tuesday morning's practice, Bryant said the media was trying to damage his relationship with teammate Roy Williams. "I didn't know nothing about no tradition," Bryant said. "The only thing about me ... when I try to do something right, ya'll try and turn it negative and I don't feel like that's right. I'm trying my best to do the right thing but it seems like I can't do the right thing because every little thing that I do ya'll watching it and try to make a big deal out of it."

SNIP

On Monday afternoon, Bryant met with former NFL player and current television analyst Rodney Harrison, who said the rookie needs to carry the pads if asked by a veteran.

"I said this is a situation where this is a custom and a ritual that's been around before you were even born," Harrison said in recalling his conversation with Bryant. "I had to do it and everybody had to do it."

15. Yeah, he needs a good PR person to make sure the media never directly quotes him...
...and only paraphrases what he says...if they can decipher it.
