Brian Wilson fined for wearing orange shoes

The commissioner's office does not take kindly to fashion scofflaws, and Brian Wilson's wallet is $1,000 lighter as a result. That was Wilson's fine for wearing all-orange shoes when he saved Tuesday night's 6-4 victory against Florida.

Wilson said he was told his shoes were nonconforming and needed to be at least 50 percent black, the standard Giants shoe color. So instead of enjoying his customary dominoes game before batting practice, he sat by his locker coloring all but the tops of the shoes black.

"Nike Air Sharpies," he joked before launching into a comedy routine on Marlins manager Edwin Rodriguez's complaints about the shoes, which Wilson busted out for the All-Star Game. Rodriguez called them "too flashy."

Wilson is a different kind of guy and one of the best closers in baseball. The Marlins manager was right to complain though. There are good reasons for these uniform rules..and one has to think Brian would be better served concentrating on his pitching instead of his shoe color.

5. That's one point of view
here's another:

Wilson's shoes are ugly and inadvisable; but that does that mean they give him an unfair advantage? The Marlins have offended us all with the vast sea of orange seats for years, what makes shoes so different?

7. I don't think so..
Giants colors are black and orange..Wilson's shoes are orange. In fact, they're very similar in color to the Giants alternative jerseys.

Edited on Thu Jul-29-10 10:29 AM by RockaFowler
I thought the Dolphins jerseys were bad, but these are God-Awful.

ANd Brian Wilson's shoes are worse with that black magic marker on them. Get a new pair of shoes. Doesn't he have any money?? Or is it wasted on his horrible haircut??

9. Of all the major US pro team sports...
there are probably fewer "good reasons" for uniform rules in baseball than any of them. Even if all players wore exactly the same thing - or if everyone wore something different - there's no problem figuring out who is in the field and who is at bat or a baserunner. After all, when was the last time you played softball and had a discussion about whether to play "shirts & skins?" ;)

Of course, there do have to be some rules about things like jewelry for safety reasons, but ugly shoes confer no competitive advantage.

It's about aesthetics and nothing more. Well, maybe merchandising too...

10. I hate this crap.
Breaking the uniform code...blah blah blah. And yet, they'll make all sorts of god awful alternate or throw back uniforms. This gets them mad because its a fashion statement they can't make money off of, no doubt...

11. Read the whole article:
Edited on Thu Jul-29-10 11:00 AM by Auggie

...Wilson said he was not trying to be flashy. His old cleats wore down, and the orange pair fit him best.

Manager Bruce Bochy initially said he was going to take the shoes away until he learned Wilson was blackening them. Bochy feared his closer could be suspended if he kept wearing them.

13. I don't get why professional baseball players want to look like softball players, period.
There is a mystique about a professional baseball uniform, particularly those gleaming white home uniforms. I for one simply do not understand why any team would choose, for example, to wear dark or colored jerseys on Sundays at home. I'll never forget my first game at Tiger Stadium. The grass was greener than anything I'd ever seen, and the white uniforms just sparkled against it.

When players want to add their own touches, it always looks to me like the sad little girl in the Brownie troop whose parents couldn't afford to get her the same shoes as everyone else.

Plus, I hate orange!

The guy's been off his rocker since the Beach Boys made 'Pet Sounds'. Does Eugene Landy know about this deal? Shit. The shoes could have been pink. I hear Mike Love talked him out of that.

18. MLB should enforce a "No trousers down to ankles"
Edited on Fri Jul-30-10 11:54 PM by Twillig
"stirrups and sanitary stockings underneath are mandatory"

$100K fine. No exceptions.

Hell, the NFL comes to a grinding halt if a players socks fall down or a players shirt is outside the pants.

Take a stand!

These down to the shoe pants like this orange-footed goober is wearing are ridiculous.

A bad ridiculous. Stirrups and socks are a good ridiculous. Tradition, goddamit!

19. Did Wilson Get suspended too?
How come Bochy didn't bring him in for the save against the Dodgers tonight? (They could have used him, too, as the Dodgers scored 3 in the ninth to give the faithful fans a scare before winning 6-5). That's two meltdowns late in the game for the Giants recently after blowing a bigger lead against the Marlins, no less. Well, they ended up winning both games so I guess that's the important thing. But the fans are wondering what the heck is going on.

As for the shoes, I think the whole thing is BS. Yeah, it's an ugly color but that's no reason to levy this kind of punishment. The Dodgers' relief pitcher Justin Miller was ordered to only wear long sleeve shirts no matter how hot it was to cover up his heavily tattooed arms. Another stupid decision by MLB...

20. Giants say Wilson had back spasms
Edited on Sat Jul-31-10 08:49 AM by Upton
last night's 9th inning was ridiculous. They now have no lefty in the bullpen so Bochy was forced to bring in a starting pitcher to face Ethier and Loney. And nobody down there, outside of Wilson and maybe Chris Ray, is what you would call dependable. The Giants need some bullpen help or they're going to suffer..
