Stephen Strasburg has torn ligament; faces surgery
espn.com / 8-27-10

WASHINGTON -- Rookie right-hander Stephen Strasburg has a significant tear on the ulnar collateral ligament that probably will require reconstructive Tommy John elbow surgery, the Washington Nationals announced Friday.

The star rookie pitcher has had two MRIs since he was removed from Saturday's game at Philadelphia. The initial diagnosis was a strained tendon in his right forearm. But the first MRI raised enough questions for the team to order a more enhanced MRI that was performed Thursday.

Strasburg is scheduled to see Dr. Lewis Yocum.

Strasburg was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday, the second time he's been on the DL in less than a month. He was previously shelved with inflammation in his right shoulder.

2. This guy's "career" has really taken a turn for the worst
Tommy John surgery isn't what it used to be, but I've been reading Strasburg may miss the entire 2011 season.

3. I'm beginning to think the Nats are just a younger version of the Cubs

If not for bad luck they'd have no luck at all..\
Edit: About a year recovery. The Nats had another pitcher, Jordan Zimmerman who had TJ surgery last August and just pitched his first major league game since last night.

7. Very superficial similarities.
Strasburg did not pitch NEARLY as much in the majors before his injury. It looks like they over worked this guys arm which is NOT the case here with Strasburg. I've been reading about a bunch of young pitchers that have had the same injury and come back stronger. Chris Carpenter, Tim Hudson etc. Apparantly if you throw like Strasburg does, it makes you good but also it seems that this type of injury inevitable.

9. Terrible blow for the Nats

They were very cautious with him too. A positive note: Josh Johnson came back even stronger after Tommy John surgery.
