What is it going to take? Somebody getting killed?

Tyler Colvin is in the hospital.

1. I saw that live on tv
And it didn't look that serious at first until they started showing the replay. Colvin was tracking the flight of the ball when the splintered end of the bat hit him. Now ballplayers are going to track the flight of the ball because they are supposed to. They shouldn't have to worry about getting impaled on the basepaths. Selig needs to take action now.

3. I agree
I knew a guy who played in a softball game where a player was hit in the chest by a thrown ball running the bases, and was killed. The velocity of a thrown ball in an IM softball game probably can't even begin to mimic that of a professional bat (not to mention the shape of it). The bats are unsafe.

4. It should be safer for sure..
I gotta a kick out of some who say they should go Aluminum...

They have no idea of the difference between Aluminum and Wood in the MLB.

6. If they went to metal or composite bats
there would be a lot of deaths, and they wouldn't just be on the field. Fans would get killed. They've even had to ban some materials (titanium) from softball, because fans WERE getting killed.

10. And since a lot of players like and use the bats
It would be difficult to pull off. Also there isn't enough to make ash bats for everyone.

8. Metal Bats and wood bats
I think most of you forget that it was an ash bat that splintered and went into Steve Yeager's neck. That was how the flap on catchers masks were invented.

Secondly, a ball coming off a wood bat loses 5% of it's power. A ball coming off a metal bat actually increases it's power by 15%. Dead pitchers, third basemen and fans.

9. I don't know why they don't laminate them with a layer or two of kevlar.
