Devils oppose assemblyman's bid to replace symbol
Edited on Tue May-31-05 01:07 PM by Bleachers7
TRENTON, N.J. -- What chance do the New Jersey Devils give a proposal that would give the NHL team a less demonic name?

Think hell freezing over.

"I can assure you the Devils name will never change, and I think there are more important things to be thinking about than something that will never happen," chief executive officer Lou Lamoriello said. "It's who we are and what we want to be."

State Assemblyman Craig Stanley is taking issue with a satanic symbol representing the team, which has won three Stanley Cup championships.

"This is an age where symbolism is very important," said Stanley, a Baptist deacon whose resolution to rename the team is to be introduced in the Assembly next month. A new name would be chosen in a statewide competition.

1. Do they have to stop selling Underwood deviled ham at the snack bar, too?
not really, but... you get the idea. What a moran.

There is, of course, nothing remotely Satanic about the name; it derives from the folkloric creature the "Jersey Devil", which was widely believed in Colonial times to live in New Jersey's swamps. Sort of like, if Scotland had a team, naming them the "Loch Ness Monsters".

The Devils? Perfectly harmless. Assemblyman Stanley, on the other hand... :banghead:

2. Didn't Seinfeld show us the dangers of having the Devil as a mascot?
When Elaine's boyfriend painted his face then acted all weird in front of a car driven by an elderly Italian priest, sending him to the hospital, where Elaine, dressed in a white headdress and dress visited him, and when he woke up, the sun was behind her, and he thought he was seeing the Madonna? Is that what we want? Priests keeling over in broad daylight? Think of the children! I mean the priests! I mean the priests will think of the children - probably a bit too much, but still, I'm proposing that the NHL double the size of a team allowed on the ice from 6 to 12 and change the name of the Devils to the Apostles. I yield the rest of my time.

4. Absurd
The Jersey Devil is part of the culture of NJ. When my daughter was in HS, she played many a game against the NJ Devils Youth Hockey teams.

What it is next? Let's put up a big WalMart where Salem Witch Museum is? Can't "celebrate" witchcraft either, ya know.

5. Well, no theocratic impulse there, nosirreebob.
Nothing like establishment of a state religion. No attempt to dictate to private citizens purely on the basis of one's religious beliefs--good golly, no. No one in the Republican party would ever want to do anything like THAT.

10. Gods, what else will they think of?
The Jersey Devil is a regional legend, and to have a hockey team named after it is honoring the legend.

11. Hey Assemblyman Dumbass, it's NOT named for Satan!
From the article:

"However, the team's name, chosen in a 1982 fan contest, comes from the mythical Jersey Devil, not the Christian symbol of the antichrist, according to Weird N.J., a travel guide to the state's most offbeat attractions.

The mythical Jersey Devil -- with batlike wings, a forked tail and oversized claws -- was said to terrorize Pine Barrens dwellers in the 18th century after being born the 13th child to poor south Jerseyans and morphing into a dinosaurlike beast."

Now take your theocracy elsewhere, asshat.
