Chad Pennington to start for Miami
<snip>

"The Miami Dolphins will start Chad Pennington at quarterback against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, coach Tony Sparano announced Wednesday.

Pennington replaces Chad Henne, who has been inconsistent this season with eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions for the 4-4 Dolphins.

In making the change, Sparano said the move wasn't "an indictment on future."

The 34-year-old Pennington started for the Dolphins during the 2008 season after being released by the New York Jets and led Miami to the AFC East title.

Henne, who was drafted by Miami in the second round of the 2008 draft, took over as the team's starter last season."

Dolphins Sign Veteran CB Al Harris; Waive Jason Allen

<snip>

"The Miami Dolphins have signed cornerback Al Harris, who was released by the Green Bay Packers on Monday.

To make room on the roster, the Dolphins waived cornerback Jason Allen, who was the 16th overall choice of the 2006 NFL Draft and was leading the team with three interceptions this season.

Harris began the 2010 season on the physically unable to perform list while trying to recover from a knee injury that cost him the final six games of the 2009 campaign. He had been practicing with the Packers since October, but the team had to make a determination on his status Monday and decided to release him.

The 35-year-old veteran played his first five NFL seasons with Philadelphia before joining Green Bay for the 2003 campaign. He started all 102 games he played with the Packers and earned Pro Bowl honors in both 2007 and 2008."

The Dolphins seem to be taking this Veterans Day thing really seriously.:P

2. Two surprises for me.
First, I didn't realize Pennington was still hanging around. 'nuff said.

Second, what did Allen do wrong, or is he injured? Fish fans, please enlighten me.

but two things. You can't release someone who is injured and Terrell Owens said after the Bengals-Phins game he was liability and they kept exploiting the match-up. I guess the Dolphins agreed with him is all I can say there.

4. It just seemed odd.
The guy leading the team in interceptions isn't usually the weak link in the defensive backfield. I guess it's not impossible, though.:shrug: I wonder if there is something more, or is TO coaching the Fins now.:crazy:

5. I don't know much myself
and that comment was from two weeks ago. Perhaps the Baltimore receivers were burning him.

I'm reading an article that says this move wouldn't of been a surprise at any point in Allen's career besides this season. I'd have to see those interceptions of film I guess, it could be a receiver's drop, a lineman tipping the ball, something that indicates he was at the right place at right time.

I know Deltha O'Neal got 4 interceptions in a game but he was an awful corner.

8. I'm OK with both decisions
Jason Allen made his bed against Cincy. And I like Henne, but he has been awful the last 2 weeks. I mean come on the INTs have been just bad. Now I can wear my Pennington Jersey again :)

10. Ed Reed said Henne was very easy to read---one of the easiest...
and there lies the problem with Henne.

His out routes were very easy to read because he was late getting the throw out.

His accuracy the last couple of weeks has been inconsistent and he's missed very easy scores.

I'm glad to see Sparano swallowing a bit of his pride and changing things up.

Back in the Wannstedt days, Wanny stuckk with Jay Fiedler no matter how bad Jay was playing....that was his downfall.

11. Chad Henne is a coach killer
A long term commitment to him would be a disaster, and waste a good young nucleus on this team. I posted that months ago, if not last year.

Everything is too long to process with Henne, physically and mentally. His delivery is like a javelin. Take away the immediate call and he can't adjust. Occasionally he looks brilliant when everything unfolds as scripted. Nice accuracy; who cares? You have to rescue plays and ad lib to get the ball into the end zone with regularity in this league. Win 3+ playoff games in a single year with him?

Also, Henne doesn't hurt enough. I always reference the early '70s Dolphins in that regard. Every loss was like a morgue, incredible pain in expression and voice. Meanwhile, the 2010 Dolphins have a new show called 5th Quarter, a full hour on TV after every game. Numerous locker room interviews. Henne couldn't be more bland or seemingly unconcerned. After every loss he explains improvement must follow. No variance, no sense of deep emotion or care. I posted that on a site last night, long before this announcement.

Pennington will have ups and downs. If you take away the underneath stuff he can't consistently hurt you. But I don't really care about a Pennington renewal, nor its duration. Anything that indicates Sparano understands he needs to upgrade on Henne, I'm encouraged, far beyond any road wins or other irrelevancies from 2010.

***

Jason Allen has the skill set to be a mediocre safety. He's less than that at cornerback. I never understand why they keep rotating him instead of full trial at safety. Early in the season he out worked a floundering Sean Smith and played above his head, nabbing a few interceptions that basically hit him in the lap. Most Dolphin defenders drop passes into their lap so it was a brief revelation.

Allen tests as a great athlete. That's what fooled Saban, who wasted the 16th pick on him. If shuttle runs and cone drills meant points, Jason Allen equals jackpot. That type of ability never translated to the field. You'd swear it wasn't the same guy who racked up the test scores. Can't cover, can't tackle, similar to John McKay's lament of the '76 Buccaneers. Allen was basically the most overpaid special teams player in the league the last few years.

13. Exactly--- and as I pointed out above---
Wanny's insistence that he stick with Jay Fiedler through thick or thin was an early indication that Wanny's hubris and arrogance would be his undoing.

I remember Wanny having the chance of getting Drew Bree's and he saying that Fielder had a better upside.

I'm pleased to see Sparano can at least admit a mistake and move on.

14. Yeah I never understood that
Fiedler was mediocre and Wannstedt insisted on keeping him around a lot longer than he should have been. And thus the demise of the Dolphins began with Wannstedt. He was a horrible coach from the get-go. I was totally glad when he left (even though it should have been sooner)

15. Lasted two plays -
Miami Dolphins' Chad Pennington out with shoulder injury

<snip>

"Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington, who has had three surgeries on his right shoulder, left Sunday's game with Tennessee only two plays into his second stint as Dolphins starting quarterback with what the Dolphins called a shoulder injury.

Pennington left holding his right arm to his side bent at the elbow. On the first play, Tennessee defensive end Jason Babin dropped Pennington as the quarterback threw toward tight end Anthony Fasano. Pennington stayed in one more play, a short throw that Brian Hartline took for a 19-yard gain.

Before the next play, the Dolphins called timeout and Pennington left the game. He's had a history of shoulder problems, most recently a season-ending injury in the third game of the 2009 season.

Chad Henne, a 2008 second-round pick, took over from there until earlier this week when a 4-4 record and only 11 offensive touchdowns prompted Dolphins coaches to go back to Pennington.

On Sunday, Henne took over and led the Dolphins the final 12 yards to the game's first touchdown, a 2-yard Ronnie Brown run."

17. OK, so I was a few days early with my "He's still in the NFL?" jibe...
I'm stuck watching the Vikes/Bears, or as I prefer to think of it, the ongoing "How good a pick are we gonna get for Moss, anyways?" Sweepstakes...

It's looking better every week!:rofl:
