This fixture is essentially a substitute for a Catalan war of independence from Spain. Under the Franco regime, Catalan was outlawed, the only place they could speak it without being arrested was the football chanting inside the FC Barcelona stadium. Real Madrid was the propaganda tool of Franco's regime, many of the star players in their history was destined for FC Barcelona but were denied work permits/visas etc unless they signed for Real Madrid instead. The FC Barcelona club house was even bombed by facist forces during the civil war.

Figo was the great, great star of FC Barcelona, he was the hero of the entire Catalan nation. Then he went to Madrid to play for Real.

Barca gave Madrid, Jose probably got stoned in the more traditional way.
