I never heard of him so it must be baseball.

Namath definitely fits but global stature would make sense, a true cool Winter Olympic hero like Jean Claude Killy or Alberto Tomba.

Great to know somebody here remembers him. He is also a good story teller in his old age. I enjoyed his antics back in my (1950s) early days of watching television and The Game Of The Week. When Dizzy Dean interviewed Jimmy, it was a riot.
