Joe Thornton scores 300th goal in win over Red Wings..
Edited on Wed Feb-23-11 12:50 PM by Upton

Thornton scored his 300th NHL goal and assisted on both by Devin Setoguchi as the San Jose Sharks held on to beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 on Tuesday night.

The six-foot-four, 230-pound Thornton joined Mark Recchi, Mike Modano and Teemu Selanne as the only active players with at least 300 goals and 680-plus assists.

The Sharks have been rolling lately. They are having to really fight to assure themselves of a playoff spot this year..which might end up helping in the long run once the playoffs get underway.

1. What's a goal? Who are the Red Wings? And why are these guys on skates
while not doing any lifts or jumps?

3. "Only better."
The records say otherwise (just barely). ;)

7. Time for another hockey primer....
OK, we need to start with the basics.

This is what you'll be playing on...

But first, one needs a few items.

You will need to wear....

And one of these...

Lest you end up looking like this...

Now that you're fully protected, grab one of these...

...and one of these...

...and let's hit the ice!

What's that...you can't skate yet? Well, don't fear, there are training classes available...

And in no time at all you'll be skating like a pro!

Ok, now we're ready for action.

The game starts with what we in the know call a "faceoff". No, it has nothing to do with leprosy. It looks like this.

Once the puck is in play, the players scramble about to put it in what we call "the net", or "goal" to civilized folk.

But be careful while you have the puck, or you may end up in this position...

Sometimes, emotions get the better of the players, and they may want to do this to you...

But, with hard work and perseverance, a good player will eventually come through for his team...

Leading to much rejoicing and the consumption of fermented vegetable products!

12. Congratulations, Joe!
Yeah, the Sharks are red hot still (what is it, 16-2-1 or something crazy like that?). They won 8 of 10 road games in February alone in places like Washington, Boston, Detroit, Pittsburgh. Niemi has been in last year's form in nets, just incredible. And rookie of the year Logan Couture should have his own thread.
