Royals' Vin Mazzaro surrenders 14 runs in Cleveland rout; sets record
Kansas City's Vin Mazarro was charged with 14 earned runs in 2 1/3 innings of relief. According to Elias Sports Bureau, Mazarro is the first pitcher in modern baseball history (since 1900) to allow 14 or more runs in less than three innings.* Ten of those runs were scored in the fourth inning.

Mazzaro relieved Nathan Adcock in the 3rd, who relieved starter Kyle Davies after giving up three walks to four batters in the 1st.

This morning Mazzaro found himself on the way to Triple A.

The final was 19-1. Cleveland had 20 hits.

1. I'd like to know why they didn't pull Mazzarro so he didn't set the
record...after one inning he needed to go...

2. The starter lasted only four batters...
...The Royals' pitching plans came unraveled in the first inning when right-hander Kyle Davies had to leave the game with interior soreness in his pitching shoulder. His troubles set the tone for the evening, as he walked three of the first four batters.

The circumstances had (Manager Ned) Yost improvising in the dugout.

"My line of thinking was I could get through two or three innings with Adcock, bring in Mazzaro and hopefully get five innings out of him and he'd keep us in the ballgame," Yost said. "And then go to the back-inning guys and stay in it, but it didn't work out that way."

SNIP

Trying to save his bullpen as much as possible, Yost went with Mazzaro into the fifth inning, but after four of the five batters reached base and the score reached 14-1, that was enough for the right-hander.

This is a situation, I believe, where one forfeits the victory and just looks forward to the next game.

3. Still Ridiculous To Let The Kid Get Pounded
And, then to immediately send him to Omaha. Help him get embarrassed and then demote him. They should have demoted Yost.

4. The demotion was certainly adding insult to injury
But I've seen managers let pitchers get pounded for reasons as stated, plus others. Mazarro will rebound.
