NHL mum about Red Wings' possible move to Eastern Conference
from the Detroit Free Press:

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said Monday that he had not been contacted by the NHL about a possible move to the Eastern Conference, pending the sale of the Atlanta franchise.

There were several reports out of Canada on Monday that True North Sports and Entertainment would announce the purchase of the Thrashers as early as today, along with plans to relocate the club to Winnipeg, Manitoba. That would -- eventually -- create an opening in the Eastern Conference, a relocation the Wings have long coveted. They, along with the Columbus Blue Jackets, are the only Eastern Time Zone teams in the Western Conference.

The NHL, however, hasn't yet reached out to the Wings about a possible move, which probably wouldn't come until the 2012-13 season, anyway, as the schedule for next season is nearly finalized.

"We've been told nothing," Holland said. "I don't have any information. I know what I read in the newspaper." ...........(more)

1. My bet is that Nashville gets moved to the Eastern Confernce and not Detroit.

Makes more sense, and as much I would love to see the Bruins and Detroit play more than once a year, the Wings have too many good rivalries going in the West that would be ruined. Plus, Nashville would fit right into the Southeast Division as a perfect replacement for Atlanta. I'd bet money this is the move that gets made.

2. But Nashville is west of Detroit
Shouldn't that count for something?

3. I'm torn.
By rights, Detroit belongs in the East. But I live on the West Coast, which makes it nice for me that Detroit is in the west.

Detroit also gets screwed in the playoffs - they always log the most miles and have to switch time zones (they are in the Eastern Time Zone). They log the most travel miles during the year, too, IIRC. They also beef up attendance everywhere they go.

6. Seriously? The time zone excuse?
You can do better. I mean, really, you kept up the trash talk when your team was down 3-0. :eyes:

7. Well, the announcers talked a LOT during the playoffs
So I would assume it's been raised as an issue. And don't roll your eyes at my sister. :hi:

8. It wasn't so bad this year
but one year they played in L.A. at the equivalent of 9:00 a.m. or something, on a Sunday, after a Friday night game in Detroit.

5. Well, that way, at least they'd stop getting eliminated by the Sharks
unless it was in the Cup finals!
