Fan dies after fall at Rangers Ballpark
Source: MLB.com

ARLINGTON -- A man died from injuries sustained when he fell approximately 20 feet from section 5 in the left field lower reserved seats to the area behind the out-of-town scoreboard at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington on Thursday night.

The fan was identified as Shannon Stone, a 39-year-old firefighter from Brownwood, Texas, according to the Associated Press.

The fan was immediately attended to by emergency personnel and taken to a Fort Worth hospital. According to the Arlington Police Department, the man went into full arrest on the way to John Peter Smith Hospital and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

"When they had him on a stretcher and they were carrying him out, he was saying stuff like 'Please check on my son, he's left up there by himself.'" Athletics reliever Brad Ziegler said. "The people that carried him out reassured him that, 'We'll get your son, we'll make sure he's OK.' We just kind of assumed that he's talking, he's conscious, he'll be OK. To find out he's not is just ... tough."

4. Absolutely, it does.
Although I'll admit, when I first heard about the story my first reaction wasn't very kind.

However after reading the actual story, and especially getting to the part where the guy wanted to make sure that his son was safe, I softened up a little.

Or a lot.

Must be my paternal instincts.

6. That's the same part that got to me.
First thought is not of himself, but for his son's safety. I would be worried about the same thing.

11. You're off on this one, j.
Maybe it seemed like too much coverage of Hamilton to you, but there was nothing to cover on the deceased, out of respect for the privacy of his family. Which continues, as the poster here mentioned, they prefer that the video not be watched.

I feel terribly for Hamilton myself. It is every bit as much a tragedy for him, as his action directly contributed to the outcome, no matter how inadvertently. He's overcome a hell of a lot of adversity in his life and he didn't need this as well. :(

5. Didn't See The Video
Didn't realize he fell 20 feet. Wow! It's easy to get hurt REALLY badly from a fall that high. I incorrectly assumed it was a short fall. No wonder he had enough trauma to cause this much damage.

Terrible shame.

7. If you gotta leave this world...
what could be a more glorious way than to have it happen at a baseball game? I mean it beats the shit out of years of being a blithering vegetable with dementia like Sparky Anderson or my mother. And hey! He caught the ball!

14. this isn't going to be popular, but here it is..
this guy was a fucking idiot. i watched the video, and this guy essentially tried to steal a ball from another fan by leaning waaaaaay over the railing. and for what? not a homerun. not even a legit foul ball. but for a ball casually tossed into the stands by a player. and directly to another fan, with a glove. i feel terrible for the family.
