Kaepernick given chance to start
07:58 AM ET 07.11 | Look out, Alex Smith, Jim Harbaugh likes Colin Kaepernick, too. "I can't wait to start training him," said Harbaugh of Kaepernick . "As soon as that lockout ends, we'll start working with him." The 47-year-old Harbaugh said his rookie quarterback will have a legitimate chance to start this season. "All I want him to do is come in and compete and just get better each and everyday," said Harbaugh of Kaepernick. "If he does that, that will equal success for him. He's got the talent and the ability to be a starter in this league. But that's all up to him. He'll compete with Alex and the rest of our quarterbacks. The best guy will play. ... There won't be any games, there won't be any politics. We're going to throw the balls out there and let those guys have at it."

2. Alex Smith has demonstrated some real leadership..
for the first time that I can remember, by organizing and leading off season workouts for his teammates, including Kaepernick..despite the fact Colin is a threat to his already shaky job.

Even during the lockout, Harbaugh is already having a positive effect on Smith and the 49ers. I'd like to see what he can do with Alex..

3. Kaepernick would have to be Superman to take the job from Smith
No matter how poorly Smith plays there's no substitue for experience.

Harbaugh needs to review the offense Norv Turner ran -- that's the one in which Smith looked the most comfortable.

Wish we had Eric Heitmann back in the O-line. He's out for the season recuperating from neck surgery.
