Miller Paying The Taxes
Miller High Life has announced that it's going to pay the taxes on the gifts Lopez received for Jeter's 3,000 hit ball.

I think it would have been better if Derek did it, but good on Miller.

(To be fair, we don't know if Derek did something nice for the guy and just didn't publicize it.)

1. I don't understand this
Aren't the cost of these items only determined if he sells them?? I had no idea people weren't allowed to get gifts from other people. And does Jeter then have to pay taxes for the baseball??

2. I think, in most circumstances, you pay taxes...
on the actual value of the item received if it is over a certain amount.

Jeter's baseball, while having the potential to be appraised at thousands of dollars, is worth what - $6.00?
The suites that Lopez received are worth $60K. That's taxable.

3. No.
There was a thread on this in GD yesterday. Somebody actually posted a clip from the IRS code.

That gift is taxable, just like winning on a game show. It doesn't seem totally fair to me either, but apparently it's true.

Cool that Miller is stepping up. It may be bandwagon jumping, but still. . . .

4. I really think this is an internet joke that went haywire.

But he did receive "gifts" in the season tickets. Whatever.

You call it dumbass, i call it being a nice guy. He got rewarded and he's happy. Why so bitter? Jealous you didn't catch the ball?

7. No, I just think he's stupid.
Giving up what would be at least a half a million dollars to a guy who couldn't care less about you and who has made over $200 million in his career is just dumb. Particularly when you are in as much debt as he is. I'm not jealous, I'm irritated at his stupidity.

8. Really?
Well, from what I've seen, certain interests have guaranteed his tax debts on his merch, $50k in cash, a shitpile of marketing and promotion ops which will probably become more $$$$, a Topps Baseball card (at least) and part of the legacy that is the Yankees. And Lord only knows what Jeter has offered outside of what we know.

Yeah, he's stupid. Okay.
