Roenick to hockey fans: Think we're greedy? Don't come to games

June 27, 2005

PRESTO, Pa. (AP) -- Philadelphia Flyers center Jeremy Roenick has some advice for hockey fans who blame the NHL lockout on players' greed: Once it's finally settled, stay home.

"We're going to try to make it better for everybody, period, end of subject. And if you don't realize that, then don't come," said Roenick, who spoke at a charity golf event he played in over the weekend.

"We don't want you at the rink, we don't want you in the stadium, we don't want you to watch hockey," he said Saturday at the Mario Lemieux Celebrity Invitational in suburban Pittsburgh.

<snip>

"I say personally, to everybody who called us 'spoiled,' you guys are just jealous ... we have tried so, so hard to get this game back on the ice," Roenick said.

2. What a dick
Their problem is they think they should get baseball salaries when their sport doesn't nearly take in baseball money.

4. Yep, you know how vital hockey is to sustain life on this earth. Why,
shouldn't there be a Nobel for hockey?

How many lives has hockey saved today. How many nations has it lifted out of poverty, improved education, and inspired people to improve, be better than they thought they could (and I don't mean by swinging that hockey stick and breaking it over someone's back).

This guy is full of shit.

7. I Think Jeremy Hoisted A Few At The Golf Outing
This is such a stupid thing to say that i suspect he was hammered. I'm in Philly and heard him on an interview on WIP about 5 pm or so. He was trying to frame it such that he's "Controversial" and "Speak My Mind" nonsense. But, he was lucid and clear and not overwrought. On the original interview, he seemed trashed to me.

Very stupid thing to do, and very stupid thing to say.

8. Hockey players with a God complex.
Same old story. Funny thing, though. I've known a lot of cranky, up-tight surgeons, but none of them would tell their patients that, if they didn't like them personally, they should just stay home on the day of surgery.

;-)

10. He's got a point.
For one, it's a lockout, not a strike. This means that the work stoppage was put in place by the owners, not the players, so it's unfair to blame the players in that regard. For another, the players are making absolutely massive concessions in order to come back and play again, while as far as I can see, the owners aren't giving up much of anything in the deal (unless I'm mistaken). So, while the lockout can be attributed to greed, it's more on the part of the owners than the players, and it's not even close.
