Attorney: NCAA looking into whether Miami players got gifts...
MIAMI (AP) -- NCAA investigators visited the University of Miami campus Monday looking into claims that more than a dozen former or current football players received gifts and services from convicted Ponzi schemer Nevin Shapiro, his attorney said.

Shapiro has told the NCAA he provided players with the use of a yacht and other favors, said his attorney, Maria Elena Perez. Shapiro and Perez have been talking with the NCAA about the matter for a couple of months and provided documentation, she said.

University officials didn't immediately respond to requests for comment. School officials and current players were expected to be interviewed.

Shapiro's relationship with the program dates back about a decade. Some of the alleged incidents occurred in the past four years, which would be within the NCAA's statute of limitations regarding violations.

It hurts hearing these allegations. I hope that's all they turn out to be. I thought Shannon was cleaning up the program...

6. I'm not sure "cleaning up the program" is possible.
It is Miami, after all.

11. All of a sudden, I believe him
Edited on Fri Aug-19-11 03:36 PM by rocktivity
Shapiro was generous with his investors' money, donating to athletic groups and charities and getting a student-athlete lounge named after him at Miami by donating $150,000. Shapiro's name was removed from the lounge in 2008 after the school said he did not follow his pledged donation-payment plan.

And he's been plotting revenge ever since!

12. This is the guy you believe?
His rationalization statement reads like a sick parody. For the Canes' sake, I hope he keeps talking.

And obviously Yahoo and the mainstream media want no part of this rambling statement. Don't see it anywhere other than the Miami link from WPLG ABC Channel 10:

MIAMI -- Convicted ponzi schemer and ex UM booster released a statement on Wednesday.

August 17, 2011

My feelings: When the dust has settle in billions has been spent, emotions at peeks and now in the valleys, would do I really have left? Yourself, your closet family and God. That’s what I have found out after all of this craziness that has surrounded me for this past 16 months and I merely look to Psalms 3:36 in the Bible, which asks for God to shield me from the tens of thousands of people that cast there selves at me with scorn, rage and venom. I am at piece with myself and my conscience, clear as day, by coming clean and ridding myself of the cancer which once surrounded me. I have no regrets only to those who’s out there suffering without me, which wont be as long as they suspect. I feel that with absolute conviction without phony confidence. This is not fake pride, this is an agreement between myself and God. I will hold my end of the deal and I know he will up hold his. I feel relieved, I feel not a shred of sadness, other than the people I have hurt and deprived while this carnage through Miami was taking place. Those people know who they are and I can only try to make amends as I continue to live period. I’m not ashamed of myself, as I have always been made of mental toughness which originated from steel and I know that I have accomplished more than 99% of this universe versus population will ever do partially. As I sit in a dreary run down isolated cell by my lonesome in atl GA, I take solace in the fact that I stood in the line of fire in took the Govt’s and the medi and the public best shot and I will go to bed at night in sleep as though had ever happened. I am made of different fiber than most and I made my deal with God.

From the soul Nevin

13. Most of ths shit he said about Miami is already unraveling....
They interviewed Ray Ray Armstrong's Dad about a game worn Shawn Taylor Jersey that was supposedly given by Shapiro to his son... The dad said---hell---if he had a game worn Taylor Jersey, it would be in a frame hanging on his living room wall.

He called Shapiro an absolute liar.

Oh don't get me wrong.... I believe some players fucked up and took some gifts, but no where near what this parasite said they did.

18. Well there's solid evidence......
Edited on Sun Aug-21-11 05:19 PM by Jack from Charlotte
The diddy of a Co-cane said it wasn't true. That settles it. We can all go home.

And since, of course any wrong date or some other minor error is made in The Yahoo article, scUmers will come out and cry..... "See they had the wrong day. Throw..... all the evidence out."

The case of just one scUm player I recall..... Midget UM booster says he bought a suit, shoes etc..... for some scUMer. Wilfork, I think. Said when and where it was purchased. They produced a check to the clothing store when he said he bought it and the owner of the store..... ID'ed a picture of The scUm player who was fitted for the suit. Now, was the store owner in Miami out to screw the scUM program? Check was for something like $1,700.00+

That, boys and girls is.... evidence..... of a major violation. NCAA doesn't need "beyond reasonable doubt" evidence anyway. Look at other cases, like S. Cal.

If 10% of the chit the UM booster said he did is proven..... to the NCAA's satisfaction. No more scUMville. There will be players who tell the truth. Remember, the Oki State guy who lied to them? College career....over.

This is a dunk shot. Also, the feds may just come back in and depose the scUm players due to the gambling talk. Go ahead scUM-bags. Lie to the feds under oath.

Watching this may be better than watching Harris throw int.'s.

19. It was Hester he bought the suit for......

•Shelly Bloom, the owner and operator of Fashion Clothiers in Miami corroborated Shapiro purchasing a suit and clothing for Hester in his store. Yahoo! Sports also acquired Shapiro’s August 2005 Discover credit card statement, showing a $5,371.40 charge to Fashion Clothiers, on the date which Shapiro said he took Hester and Tavares Gooden to the retailer to purchase suits and other clothing.

Yup. But, she must be a liar.

This alone will send scUm to hell. But wait, there's more.....

21. Tyrone Moss has already admitted taking $$$$
Yeah the UM booster, the $$$ giver, admits giving cash and The UM player admits receiving cash. But The Miami U folks are going to deny it?
Bring Paul Dee in to defend your fetid program. There's a guy we can count on.

"Eight former Miami players or recruits confirmed receiving illicit benefits from Shapiro.

That included former Miami running back Tyrone Moss, who was one of dozens of players Shapiro named when speaking to federal investigators about his activity with Hurricanes players. According to Shapiro, he hosted Moss on his $1.6 million yacht and also gave the player a $1,000 cash payment.

When contacted by Yahoo! Sports, Moss affirmed being aboard Shapiro’s yacht.

Asked if he had been given $1,000 by the booster during their first meeting, Moss said: “Yeah. It was me and some other players with my incoming . I’m not going to say the names but you can probably figure them out yourself. When I was getting there my freshman year, it was me and a couple more players. … It was me and a few more of the guys in my incoming class that he kind of showed some love to.”

14. Don't need to believe anything UM booster, Shapiro said.....
Of the hundred plus accusations the little UM booster made, Charles Johnson, of Yahoo has corroborated 72 of them. Additionally, I heard an interview with Dan Wentzel of Yahoo in which he stated of all the accusations the little "da U" booster made, they didn't find a single case in which he lied or embellished. And if you're not aware.... Charles Johnson, who broke both The Ohio State and Utah cases so far has a flawless reputation in his exposes.

There's more on the way, too... The Fed Prosecutors who busted The Little Miami U booster, said they...... TOLD...... Miami U officials some time ago about their little scumbag.....

"Gil Childers, who was a part of the New Jersey prosecution team that investigated Shapiro's $930 million Ponzi scheme, told NBC Miami that the recent allegations that have surfaced about UM were not new news to him and that Shapiro's connections to the university were not that hard to find.
"We did reach out to the university and that did include some people who were directly involved in the Athletic Department," Childers said.......... "

Schapiro's God comments.....? Every Jack-leg throws up the... I have since got God,.... defense. BFD.

The real problem U has is their little scum bag was a huge gambler. Losing gambler. Think he might had some chats re injury reports, etc... with his bestest buddies from Da U? I'm guessing..... yup. Add gambling to the sins and.....

To quote the character George Clooney played in the movie, Michael Clayton....... Hey, Da U..... "Your so f*cked."

16. 72 is old news
Edited on Sun Aug-21-11 04:12 AM by Awsi Dooger
Dozens of them have already been picked apart. The photos are particularly laughable because many were misrepresented. Charles Robinson couldn't distinguish the Orange Bowl from the Fiesta Bowl, nor could he tell 2003 from 2005. He's got pictures with players long after they turned pro, claimed as college.

The bowling alley owner came out today and ripped Robinson and Yahoo for never contacting them. That's the site of the Shalala picture. The owner remembered that day very well and the details were tame, misrepresented by Robinson.

Nobody bets on college football injury reports. That's as ignorant as it gets, a Hollywood invention. Compare the roster size to basketball, where injuries can be a factor.

Notice that Charles Robinson stayed away completely from Shapiro's statement. That's his guy, 100 hours of jail house interviews, yet he refused comment today when asked about Shapiro's rambling statement.

The most pathetic aspect of Robinson's piece was how often sources supposedly refused to be named due to "fear of retribution from Miami fans." LOL. It shows up multiple times. That's more make believe. It doesn't happen as often in major murder cases as Robinson applies it here. For one thing, I thought Miami had no fans? The only guy anyone would be upset with is already in jail after shafting $930 million. Otherwise if there's so much volume and such indisputable evidence, then by definition nobody can blame a peripheral source. I've looked at Robinson's previous pieces. It's remarkable that in all his cases the sources are scared to come forward. He hides behind anonymous sources in lazy transitions and vague quotes. It's my guess that the sources aren't afraid until he tells them they should be, because he knows he can use it in his best interests.

If those sources are named, it's not a case of Miami fans looking for retribution, it's other media sources looking for verification. And that's the one thing Charles Robinson can't handle. He knows the NCAA will lap up all of his claims, particularly in this case because the fans and media are conditioned to assume Miami guilty. In terms of public opinion there's more risk for the NCAA to come down light on Miami than to hammer them. Robinson's flimsy "corroboration" can't stand up to journalistic scrutiny and the case would start to turn in media presentation and therefore public opinion once supposedly rigid sources weren't sure of who, what or where. In many cases their statements under balanced probing wouldn't jive with Robinson's portrayal at all. That's a guarantee, given the sheer numbers.

22. You convinced me. They had the wrong picture.....
throw the case out...... like they did with S. Cal, eh.

Oh wait.....

Tyrone Moss has already publicly admitted taking $1,000 cash on his very 1st visit to this UM booster's house.

NCAA ain't a court of law. Their standard for evidence isn't real high. There's enough evidence already to send scUM to Duke-ville for the next 10 seasons.

I can't wait to see Joe Robey Stadium in mid November with 15,000 fans for an 0-7 UM playing Duke who will be a 3 TD favorite.

Or maybe USF putting a 50 spot on Da U in Joe Robey while their 3rd teamers are scoring at will while 20,000 drunk USF fans run around terrorizing the 10,000 UM fan that might show up.

Please, God. Don't give 'em Death. Give 'em....worse than death.
