Giants Brett Pill homers in his first major league AB..
Edited on Wed Sep-07-11 07:10 AM by Upton

Pill not only homered in his first plate appearance, he did it on his first swing, roping an 0-1 Wade LeBlanc changeup down the left-field line. The ball cleared the fence with plenty of room to spare and hit the facing of a balcony on the Western Metal Supply Co. building.

The ball ricocheted back onto the field, where left fielder Kyle Blanks, who obviously did not read Pill's resume, chucked it into the stands. Padres employees had little trouble getting it back.

"Luckily, he threw it to some Giants fans," Pill said.

Clark homered in his first at-bat, on April 8, 1986, against Nolan Ryan, which Pill did not know until Brandon Crawford told him in the dugout. The rookie already has heard "Pill the Thrill" references, but said, "That's a big name to live up to. It sounds cool, though."

Pill is 27 years old. So I don't know how much of a future he has. He has joined a select group though. The other Giants to hit a HR in their first ever MLB AB are as follows..

John Montefusco at L.A. 9/3/74 ("The Count" was a pitcher)

Johnnie LeMaster vs. L.A. 9/2/75 (inside the park)

Will Clark at Hou. 4/8/86 (off Nolan Ryan)

4. That's quite an accomplishment by Milone..
Seems only eight pitchers in MLB history have homered on the first pitch they saw..

2. That was great. So was the Rockies come-from-behind victory.
Still hanging in there by a thread...

3. Now two in two games..
making Pill only the 22nd player in MLB history, and second Giant, to homer in his first two ML games. The only other Giant was Bowker and I believe he's now in the Phillies minor league system...so it isn't necessarily a sign of future success. The fact that Pill's HR yesterday was the Giants only run is just one more indication of how anemic their offense is though..

5. Going into yesterday's game...
only four other teams in MLB history have overcome deficits of six games back this late in the season to make the playoffs. After last night's debacle it's seven.

It's over. You were right Upton back in May when Posey was injured. it was over then. How they hung on so long is a an amazing testament to the pitching -- starting and relief -- and Bruce Bochy. Sabean must fire Hensley Meulens. Hitting has been a disgrace, even with the injuries.
