Calder is very difficult if you arent' used to it.

We took a Graded stakes winner over there once to breeze before
the Kenny Noe handicap. He was a real speed horse. He broke off
at the pole, turned his head around to look at me as if to say,
"You can't be serious" and proceeded to gallop around, outraged
that we would ask him to run over something like that. Needless
to say, we skipped the Kenny Noe.

Still, I look forward to The Summit of Speed tomorrow. I've always liked these kind of gimmick events. I think it brings people to the track. I also like Canterbury's Claiming Crown.

Loose horse in the infield. Typical fair circuit shit.

We warmed Mickey up two trips. We went in 2:12.3 and 2:12 he never took a bad step. I went up to the grandstands to set with my father during the race. My Dad asked me, "you're not gonna be mad at this horse if he makes a break are you? It's his first start". I said, "He ain't ever made a break since he started training. That's the least of my worries. I just want him to try. I know he's good enough. I just want an honest effort. I want him to keep his mind on his job".

As soon as the gate was away he made a break. He got back on the trot and caught the field almost running into a driver from behind. He made a break. Before it was over he made 3 breaks. We finished 6th. The race went in 2:11 on a bad track. Muddy and deep for SBreds.

All I can say is: your first whippin's your best one. I'll look at the video later and see if there is anything we can learn.

I'm feelin' a little better now after having a couple of Harp lagers. Mickey's got a little filling above his front left ankle but, nothing major, he was kickin' and playin' in his stall so I'm not gonna worry yet. We'll give him a day off and jog him Sunday. We might take him to Raceway Thursday and give him a little refresher behind the gate.

Our trainer wants to qualify him at Saginaw for the Elite Division but, after today, shit, he did everything wrong. I think we should drop him down to the Gold and let him get a little confidence. It's a long way to Oct. and the Sire Stakes Final.

In the best of times, this is not one of the more vibrant county fairs I've ever visited and it was even worse a couple of years ago when the carnies went on strike. The rides had been erected, but weren't running. You couldn't even buy an elephant ear.

Whether trotters or TB's. You can train them and paddock school
them and school them at the gate and have them fit but when they
get out there for the first time in front of the crowd and deal
with the new situation -anything can happen.

It sounds like you colt did OK. In our lingo the racing form
chart would state the he raced greenly.

and yes, they're all the same. I wish I could get inside a horses head sometime. I'd like to know what it was that distracted him.

And I was wrong about the time. I just looked up the chart and it went in 2:10.1. Mickey can do that with a jog cart. My business partner is so sour on the game today. He's ready to amish Mick.

What can you do? He hated the heavy, drying out track.
I was proud of him that he struggled home fourth on a track
he obviously detested.

Don't get down on your colt. Unless they are a Seattle Slew or
Hambleton (sp?) it is a learning experience for them when they
go over in the afternoon. But you know that.

I have been in this business since 1969 but when one of my own
horses disappoints me, I take it pretty hard. It keeps you
humble though, doesn't it?

..as if navigating around the track drag and water truck isn't enough of a handful, just wait till the horse gets an eyeful of that Ferris wheel on the first turn.

After finishing fifth as the heavy favorite in the Humana Distaff Handicap (G1) on May 7 at Churchill Downs, Madcap Escapade will try to rebound on Saturday in the $500,000 Princess Rooney Handicap (G2) against Vagrancy Handicap (G2) winner Sensibly Chic and the undefeated Happy Ticket.

Madcap Escapade sat a rapid pace as the 2-to-5 favorite in the seven-furlong Humana Distaff before fading in the stretch to finish 1 ¾ lengths behind winner My Trusty Cat. The daughter of Hennessy won the Shirley Jones Handicap (G2) and Vinery Madison Stakes (G3) in her two other starts this year.

Sensibly Chic has finished no worse than second in her five starts in 2005, including victories in the What a Summer Stakes on January 29 at Laurel Park and Vagrancy Handicap on June 12 at Belmont Park.

Happy Ticket, a four-year-old Louisiana-bred daughter of Anet, scored a 3 1/2-length win in the Chicago Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G3) on June 18 in her first appearance in a graded stakes. She has won her nine career starts by a combined 54 ¼ lengths.

Our mare is from the Good Time line and she is small. I bred her to a stallion that throws nice sized foals. He was two weeks over due and was born May 26th. He is growing like a weed.

He had a hard time nursing the first day. He was so tall he couldn't figure out how to get his head down low enough to get a nipple. He kept bumping Lady's bag, she was sore and getting frustrated. He didn't figure it out for the first day and we were worried sick we were gonna lose him. That mare is a good momma and didn't give up on him.

Sorry you got beat today but, I'm glad to hear your horse tried. That's all we can ask of them. Please post some photo's of your horses. After we got our bridle jerked yesterday it makes me feel better to look at horses and think about the future.

Here's a picture of our 2YO trotting filly at the farm. She hurt her knee in training and is getting some time off. If she doesn't get better we'll breed her next year. Please disregard those two paints in the picture. They are just boarders, they are not ours. LOL.(We like to give those riding horse people a hard time. They spend $23,000 on trailers with living quarters to haul $600 horses around.)

...the hot trotting sire du jour in Ohio. Her dam (Katie's Gold Card) is by Striking Sahbra.

I check out his winners in Horseman & Fair World every week. Our trainer is big on the Mr. Lavec's. We have a Mr. Lavec son standing in MI named Lockkeeper. He's all Jack ever wants to breed to.

Wow.

Is the first horse still racing? What an exciting moment, to have bred yourself a winner.

and that is a beautiful foal.

The foal is the nicest one I have had so far. He is really big
and strong and extremely correct.

The other horse is now six, I think, and I am in the process of
trying to track him down. HE won eight races and 155,000, then
he was claimed and went to Louisana, then Mountaineer in W.VA.
Then he dropped off the map. I wrote to the trainer who had him
last asking about him but got no response. I would like to get
him back if all possible and let him retire in peace.

He was named for my grandfather and meant a lot to all of us.
He broke him maiden by five at Belmont Park on mother's day several
years ago. It was one of the most wonderful days of my life.

Lava Man took the lead on the far turn and went on to a record-setting 8 3/4-length victory Saturday in the $750,000 Hollywood Gold Cup.

The 4-year-old gelded son of Slew City Slew earned his first grade I victory nearly two months after running in a claiming race where his owners could have lost him for $100,000.

Instead, Steve, Tracy and Dave Kenley of Phoenix, who make up STD Racing Stable, and their partner Jason Wood were hoisting magnums of champagne in the winner's circle.

"I was shaking so much, I don't know how far he won by," Steve Kenley said. "I was just crossing my fingers."

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - July 9, 2005 - There was no denying Dr No a one-length victory in the $700,000 William R. Haughton Memorial, the seventh race on Saturday night at the Meadowlands.

The four-year-old caught Boulder Creek <$7.00, $4.40> for his third win in nine starts this year, pacing the mile in 1:50.1. Ponder <$2.80>, the 9-5 favorite, finished third by one and a half lengths.

Caller One finishes 2nd in the first race at Calder today.

So many horses come to Calder and flop. He can just handle
any track, any time.

ELMONT, N.Y. - After a month's respite following his dominant Belmont Stakes victory, Afleet Alex returned to work Sunday morning, breezing five furlongs in 1:00.93 over Belmont Park's main track.

Regular rider Jeremy Rose was aboard Afleet Alex, whose time was the 13th fastest of 40 timed works over the main track, which was rated fast. Belmont Park clockers caught Afleet Alex in fractions of 13.42 seconds, 25.75, 37.73, and 49.44, meaning he got his last eighth in 11:59 seconds. Clockers timed Afleet Alex galloping out six furlongs in 1:14.58 and seven-eighths in 1:29.33.

"That's just basically a maintenance breeze, let him stretch his legs, put a little air into him," trainer Tim Ritchey said. "Jeremy said he went great, hit the ground perfect, did it very easily."

After falling one length short when third behind Giacomo in the Kentucky Derby, Afleet Alex overcame a bumping incident with Scrappy T at the top of the stretch to win the Preakness by 4 3/4 lengths before dominating the Belmont Stakes by seven. Those victories, along with his eight-length romp in the Arkansas Derby, have Afleet Alex perched comfortably atop the 3-year-old division.

Putting bad habits and a troubled trip behind her, Madcap Escapade reached millionaire status with a 5 ¼-length victory in the $500,000 Princess Rooney Handicap (G2) on Sunday at Calder Race Course.

The four-year-old Hennessy mare tuned up for a possible start in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) by drawing off in the six-furlong race, part of the Summit of Speed card at the Miami, Florida, track.

Madcap Escapade, who is owned by Bruce Lunsford, earned her third graded stakes win in four starts this season by sprinting clear at the start and building on her advantage to prevail in 1:09.93 on a fast track.

"She was getting hold of the surface well,’’ winning jockey Jerry Bailey said. "It helped her cause to finish well when she didn’t try to run off down the backside. She waited for me to call on her.’’

I'd like to know what happened to him.

a potential rivalry between him and LITF...I am not really a sprint fan, but I recently started to take interest because of those two.

The connections must be devastated. I do feel for them.
