You'll never guess what's at stake in the upcoming B1G championship game

That, my friends, is the Stagg-Paterno Championship Trophy.

No foolin'. You just can't make this stuff up.

http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/11/08/stagg-family-may-take-issue-with-stagg-paterno-championship-trophy/

The great grandson of Amos Alonzo Stagg said his family would consider re-evaluating the name of the Big Ten championship trophy — the Stagg-Paterno Championship Trophy (pictured) — if “more disturbing evidence” comes to light in the case surrounding former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, CBS’ Dennis Dodd writes today.

Robert Stagg said he and his family have been monitoring the situation at Penn State closely. Sandusky has been indicted on child-sex charges, and school athletic director Tim Curley and administrator Gary Schultz reportedly knew of at least one incident in 2002 where Sandusky sodomized a young boy in the locker room of an on-campus football facility, but did not report the incident to proper authorities....

“If he has been complicit in this, he’s got to step down,” said Stagg. “Unfortunately that would be the case.

“We’ve kind of cheered JoePa along. We’re still hoping he’s cleared on this. If something else comes to light and he kind of let this go leaving someone else to handle, then we may feel very differently.”

1. It's always a mistake to name things for someone still alive.
And sometimes a mistake to name them after the dead (as I think each time I see the sign for our local Ronald Reagan Parkway)

3. It sure does.
And Paterno's reputation, set to hi-speed chop/dice, is finished.

5. They've now dropped Paterno's name

The Big Ten has removed Joe Paterno's name from the Big Ten football trophy. The news comes in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal and Penn State's decision to fire Joe Paterno last week.

There is no official announcement on the Big Ten website at the moment but here is the statement from Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany:

"We believe that it would be inappropriate to keep Joe Paterno's name on the trophy at this time," Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany said in a statment. "The trophy and its namesake are intended to be celebratory and aspirational, not controversial. We believe that it's important to keep the focus on the players and the teams that will be competing in the inaugural championship game."
