Tigers hire Jim Leyland as new manager
Edited on Wed Oct-05-05 10:02 AM by ih8thegop
From Yahoo!:

<snip>

Ilitch is confident Jim Leyland is the difference-maker his once-proud franchise desperately needs.

"When you get an opportunity to work with a person that has won a World Series and a lot of division championships and is highly respected," Ilitch said, "you don't have to be very smart to recognize that you have a good baseball man."

Detroit signed Leyland to a three-year contract to replace manager Alan Trammell, who was fired a day earlier after three seasons. Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski, who was hired in 2001, has two years left on his deal.

"There's no room for any excuses now," he said. "I don't see any reason why we can't improve significantly."

1. Well, if we had to lose Tram, I think Leyland is good
now if they'll just back him up with some pitching....

2. That was a surprise to me
I don't think Trammell deserved to get canned after this season. He got about all you could get out of that mediocre cast. Plus he has seriously paid his dues, not only as a player but as a manager of the horrible Tiger teams of late.
I think the one who needs to get canned it the person who decided to trade Kyle Farnsworth.

3. I completely agree
Admittedly, I'm not a baseball guy. Easily verified by the fact I've never heard of Kyle Farnsworth. In fact, I always know it's a baseball thread here if the person named in the header is someone I've never heard of, which happens often.

But in my years of semi-tolerance I was a Tiger fan. How they can dismiss Alan Trammell after only four years, especially only two years after the disastrous season with maybe 50 wins? My impression was the team was on the upswing and no one in the organization pretended they had enough talent to seriously contend.

Trammell was always a class act and deserved much better. I liked that he was a link to the last championship team, and had been rewarded with the job. Now you've got a guy who is 60 but looks 80 and admits he doesn't know a damn thing about the team or league. My disinterest will soar.
