We breed some of the best football players in the country, plus some basketball stars, and stars in other pro sports. We do not have that many great pro teams but we feed to the pro more then any other state.
I think that all of the Spring Training sites may be what puts them over the top; I go to Vero Beach nearly every spring, and it's simply heaven on earth.
Based soely on the Yankees and their domination of the sport of baseball.
Throw in the Islanders and their 4 Stanley Cups... The Rangers and their huge victory in 1994... The Giants two Super Bowls... The Jets and their sport-changing 1968 Championship... The Knicks and their two championships... Buffalo and their domination of the AFC in the 90s.... The Mets and their amazing run in 1969 and wild win in 1986...
We're up there, but we probably should win more. We would if our sports writers didn't scare players away from playing here.
Detroit is consistently referred to as one of the best sports towns in the country. Where else do they routinely sell out the stadium for a lousy NFL team? Even the Tigers have maintained a loyal following despite their continued slump. The 2005 Baseball All Star game and 2006 Super Bowl will be played in Detroit.
The Pistons are the reigning NBA champs and the Wings (when we HAVE hockey) have three Stanley Cups in the last ten years and are a serious contender every year.
And look at all the NFL quarterbacks that came out of the University of Michigan too.
How many great baseball players were born in NYC? We have the Yankees, the Jets, the Rangers. Great hockey town. Illinois? C'mon. The Blackhawks haven't won a Stanley Cup in how many years? The Cubs and White Sox have even longer droughts. The Bulls were good with MJ but not anymore.
