Garciaparra in Pinstripes? It's Not That Far-Fetched
By TYLER KEPNER
Published: December 6, 2005

DALLAS, Dec. 5 - There is no obvious place to put him, and he is not an immediate priority. But as they sift through a weak free-agent market, the Yankees are intrigued by a familiar name: Nomar Garciaparra.

Two years ago, Garciaparra, the Cubs infielder, would have qualified as a megawatt star at the winter meetings, but injuries have diminished his market value. Still, his agent, Arn Tellem, has contacted teams and found enough interest to make the trip here to meet clubs in person.

There are probably a half-dozen teams that have expressed interest in him," Tellem said in a telephone interview. "It's starting to pick up. That's why I'm going to Dallas. I have a number of meetings with teams to talk about him."

Tellem would not name the teams, but Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman said Tellem had called him about Garciaparra. He would get little playing time on the left side of the infield with the Yankees, but Garciaparra could conceivably play every day at other positions.

5. Cano
yanks already have a pretty decent second baseman in Cano. Nomah would be a utility player.

2. Weird.
What's he going to do, play 3rd? Would the Yankees really have the (guts) to shift Jeter to CF and play A-Rod at SS? Oh man would that be interesting...

4. nomar
has already told the yanks he would play center or be a utility player. with all of his injuries lately (wrist, groin, achillies tendon) he isnt the same player he once was.

wouldnt it be odd though that the yankees could conceivably have the 3 great SS of the mid-late 90's on their team at the same time.

8. This Red Sox fan thinks that's frickin hilarious.
First, you fellas really kinda don't need him--Jeter and PayRod can BOTH play the position. Second, what you'd be getting is an injury-riddled money pit.

11. He'll be relatively cheap....
..and if it weren't for the shithead medical staff of the Red Sox he likely wouldn't have these nagging injuries.

12. If Nomar
signed it would be as an uber utility guy. He'd likely play several positions to augment the bench.

14. does it matter?
The White Sox already have repeated. Next season is a formality. :P

BTW would he DH or play 1B? I dont see him stealing any fielding time from ARod or Jeter.

18. Because It Won't Cost Them Much To Do So
Edited on Sat Dec-17-05 08:53 PM by Yavin4
What are they losing to get him? A few million? No players would be involved. If they get him, play him at first, Giambi is the DH, and then they can live with light-hitting Bubba Crosby in CF.

It's a better plan than say trading away Cano or Wang to get Torri Hunter who they can sign next year as a FA for the 2007 season.

19. Nope. Dodgers.
http://redsox.bostonherald.com/otherMLB/view.bg?articleid=117601

A phone call from Joe Torre and a chance to re- ignite a career in New York wasn’t enough to entice Nomar Garciaparra to join the Yankees.

Last night, the former Red Sox shortstop agreed in principle to a one-year deal with the Dodgers worth $6 million in base salary. The 32-year-old will play first base.

According to a plate-appearance incentive, Garciaparra could earn more than $8 million next year. He made $8.25 million last year for the Cubs when he played in only 62 games due to a severe left-groin injury.

According to sources, agent Arn Tellem in formed the Yankees, Astros and Indians last night that Garciaparra wasn’t going to be joining them.

20. I love how these players just think they can walk in and play 1st base.
Well, I wish him well. At least I hope he stays healthy.

Hopefully this is the end of the Yanks' picking up other team's high-dollar flotsam and jetsam.
