Why isn't Oregon in a BCS game?
They finished 5th in the BCS. How do they end up playing #23 Oklahoma in the Pacific Holiday bowl? Why aren't they in a BCS game?

1. East Coast bias, of course
no one watches Pac Ten games. they're on too late. But Oregon basically lost to Notre Dame, that I can understand, but Ohio State? that blows.

5. How about middle of the country bias?
It was either Ohio St or Notre Dame that took their spot.

6. that's the East
Ohio's only one state away from New York, after all. And Notre Dame has a strong following in the East.

4. Because ND and Ohio State will bring higher TV ratings....
and most likely (definitely in the case of ND and most likely in the case of OSU) bring more people to the bowl venue.

Its all about money.

14. Yes, yes. Popularity trumps accomplishment!
that justifies everything.

I suppose If the Golden Gomers had lost more games it would be okay to be in the Fiesta Bowl just like in
2000.

Let me remind you of that experience. The Gomers got beat by Oregon State

41-9

The Gomers claim to fame this year is losing to USC. I'd go farther and say that it was having them 4th and 9 and
choking it away, but what the hey?

Losing is losing. Like losing to Michigan State.

Notre Dame's Losing 7 of the last 7 bowl games they've been in is an indication that their popularity consists of getting
their asses handed to them every year in a bowl game.

I'll be watching to see the 'other' OSU lay the smack down on ND.

18. And there it is
You know your team sucks when your season pinnacle is a loss.

Notre Dame barely got out of Palo Alto alive, while Oregon thumped the Cardinal 44-20. Oh, that's right--that was a win, and the only thing ND has to be proud of this season is its loss to USC.

23. plus, Notre Dame is cheaper
under the new rules, the BCS pays Notre Dame only 4.5 million for the appearence, Oregon costs 12.5 million. (it's the same money to the schools, the rest goes to the conferences)

11. Because the BCS is about money
A Notre Dame-Ohio State game gets better ratings. Now I may be biased but that is what its about. The Bowl games are no longer about achievement, it is about money. Add a fifth BCS game and we don't have this problem.

By Tony Gerdeman

I know that I don’t speak for all Ohio State fans when I say that people just need to stop whining about Notre Dame getting an automatic bid for being in the Top 6 of the BCS poll. If there wasn’t a Top 6 stipulation for mid-majors, then we’d never be able to see a Utah or a Memphis or an Arkansas State or a Notre Dame in the BCS.
.
.
.
And so what if Notre Dame has lost seven consecutive bowl games. You can’t always expect to win 14.3% of your bowl games. If you look at their opponents over those seven bowl games, it’s easy to see why they were unable to overcome the big school mystique.
.
.
In the 2000 season, Notre Dame lost in the ’01 Fiesta Bowl 41-9 to Oregon State. There is no truth to the rumor that they sold their entire ticket allotment to Nebraska fans. It was probably this game that epitomized the distance between a BCS school and a mid-major like Notre Dame or Tulane or Louisiana-Lafayette.
.
.
.
In 2004, Notre Dame once again lost to Oregon State. This time the bowl was the Insight Bowl and the score was 38-21. However, this time Notre Dame exacted their revenge on the hurtful Beavers by losing to them by fifteen fewer points than they did in 2001. This was a clear indicator that Notre Dame was definitely ready for that next step. That “next step” was aided last year when Utah made the BCS and walked all over mighty Pittsburgh. Notre Dame saw that and said, “If Utah can win a BCS game, then so can we!”

17. Because they are Oregon
It's that simple.

The Dumbers of ND have so much more national appeal. It's the same reason why we (Bama) are going to a better bowl than LSU even though they beat us and won the SEC West championship. Names carries a lot of weight...

30. Face it, Oregon was over-rated...
...Oklahoma was far from the best in the Big 12, and they still beat Oregon. If you're a half-way decent team, and have a half-way decent coach, then you should be prepared for a bowl game since you have usually about 4 weeks. Apparently Oregon just isn't a good team.

Better hope that ND doesn't humiliate itself AGAIN in an undeserved BCS bowl on national TV. Given its history, though, it seems the more likely outcome.

35. oklahoma hasn't been struggling for quite some time
their only loss since the second week in october was against a top 20 team on the road due to two extremely controversial calls in the last minute of the game. They finished the regular season 7-4, but were certainly playing better than their record by the end ...

38. true, they were playing better
but if they were a BCS contender as in the past few years then they wouldn't have been beaten by TT on a controversial play. They would have stomped them by the third quarter and TT wasn't a bad team. This still isn't the OU team of recent years and thus Oregon really can't complain about being left out of the BCS picture now. If Oklahoma was back in top form and ORegon had still stuck with them then I would agree that they might have gotten screwed.

It's entirely possible that he did watch the game, but was too drunk to actually comprehend what was going on.

Lots of criticisms to make, but saying they "mailed it in" is so divorced from reality that it has to be the view through an alcohol-induced haze.
