Rangers sign free agent Kevin Millwood
Edited on Fri Dec-30-05 10:44 AM by Maestro
This is the first time since I've been following the Rangers, circa 1974, that they have, with such a concerted effort, gone after good pitching. We'll see if it pans out well during the season.

1. I'm just glad the Red Sox didn't get him...
We already way overpaid for one overpriced pitching free agent last year (Clement) and now we are looking to deal him anyways.

Millwood's a nice #3 guy but he's no ace by any means and the Rangers overpaid for him. Hopefully he just stays healthy enough to not become the next Chan Ho Park down there.

3. No kidding!
No more Chan Ho, please! I agreed he is overpaid, but the Rangers have a ton of money in Hicks, the owner.

2. Man, that's a little harsh
Surely you remember a fellow named Nolan Ryan:

He left Houston in a contract dispute after the 1988 season and joined the Texas Rangers...

BTW, now that Millwood is going to have to face DH's instead of pitchers hitting, he's going to be even more shaky than in the past. Just a hunch...

4. Oh I remember that, don't worry.
I saw him pitch several times, but the rest of the rotation was not that great. At that time we had the mental Kevin Brown along with Ryan, Kenny Rogers, Bobby Witt, and someone else. But my point is that Nolan was at the end of his career. I'm glad they are not signing guys in their twilight although granted Nolan in his twilight is very good just like Clemens, but man Clemens is an a$$hole.

5. Weel, I just thought that your contention was
that they had never gone after pitching since the '70s.

Even when they signed Chan Ho Park, it's fair to characterize that as an effort to go after (what was, up until the time he started pitching for the Rangers) a good pitcher.

The Rangers have had poor luck and they have overpaid many times (especially in hindsight). But I don't think their effort was lacking.

6. Hehe. I think you still missed my point.

I have never seen such a concerted effort. Meaning they went into the off-season making sure that they picked up pitching; not just one big name and a few spares. To date, they have picked up several above average pitchers this off-season including Millwood and Eaton, from San Diego. Here is a good report of what they have done to add to the rotation and even the bullpen. http://tinyurl.com/bp73l
