After Last Night's Game, Who Would You Take First In the Draft?
Assuming Vince Young comes out, who would you take in the draft and in what order?

If I needed a QB, then I'd take Leinart first. If I had a QB, then I'd take Reggie Bush. I would not take Vince Young at all in the 1st round.

2. USC's Defense Was Suspect All Season
And he wasn't robbed of the Heisman. He had a string of poor games, and he cost himself the Heisman. Moreover, his game does not translate well to the pros. His throwing mechanics are horrible, and running a lot only lands you on the IR, not the playoffs.

Young's game doesn't translate to the pros at all. If my team drafted him to play QB I would be ill the entire offseason. Take him out of the zone read offense and put him either under center or in the standard shotgun and how does he beat you? He has improved his accuracy and touch but he bird dogs the primary receiver, throws sidearmed, and lobs the downfield passes too much.

Reggie Bush ran somewhat soft in the Rose Bowl, cutting everything to the outside. But he's the freak player in this draft, with similarities to Gale Sayers and Barry Sanders. In contrast, Lendale White is a very nice player but the occasional big game he has that makes it look like he'll be the superior pro to Reggie is very misleading. My friends in the USC athletic program are hard pressed to suppress the laughter whenever White is projected as better than Reggie. The pros will take away much of Lendale White's game since he's neither particularly big or fast or powerful. A nice combo of all three, but nothing extraordinary. Reggie Bush will make the bigtime plays that win big games.

Matt Leinart simply needs to bear down and put more zip on his passes on a regular basis. He gets notoriously lazy against defenses he doesn't respect and lobs the ball too much, which is his favorite method since his touch is so outstanding. I was very surprised Leinart threw so many softies in the first half against Texas, after throwing with gusto all game against Oklahoma a year earlier. Leinart will have to be prodded in the pros to rely less on touch, but the game in, game out requirements of the pro level should snap him into that mindset very early. One or two interceptions in preseason when a safety flashes out of nowhere to pick him off should do it.

This is a very deep draft atop the first round, premier talent.

3. I think V. Young will stay in school
the only top ten team that is looking for a QB is New Orleans (and no one wants to go there) They'll probably snag Leinart. although I think he'll never be all pro in that offense, he's much more of a west coaster, where his relatively weak arm won't snag him.

Maybe the Titans? McNair won't be around too long. but Jeff Fisher isn't imaginative enough on Offense to really take advantage of Young, who's going to require someone to throw away his playbook. So I think they don't gamble on him and pass. Who's next: Jets? no. Packers? no. Raiders? no. Niners? no. Bills? no.

If he doesn't think he's going top-5, then he's staying in Austin.

Much as I don't like Texas, that's a good thing for him. Vince, get a huge insurance policy (Bush has 6 million, tax free, you can get 10) and come back, rebuild your throwing mechanics and duel with Brady Quinn for the top spot in '07. polish that touch a little, it'll save your legs. Plus, seeing how bad the Texans already are, you may still end up in Houston with Reggie in the backfield. talk about saving your legs.

4. the best pro in that game
will be Lyndell White. I'm leary of Leinart's arm strength and Bush doesn't run between the tackles. I like Young, but his throwing mechanics scare me.

5. It's funny
All three of those fantastically gifted players have significant drawbacks.

NFL Draft time will be kind of fun, particularly if Young comes out.

I still think Bush will be the best after it is all said and done. Bush will be a Barry Sanders/Donte Stallworth (on returns) type of impact guy.

6. Who's that kid named "Duff"?
Not sure of the name -- a defensive back for Texas, won the game's defensive MVP award. I wish my team could draft a quality DB like that!

7. Huff, maybe?
winner of the thorpe award, I believe. but the best DB in the
draft this year has got to be jimmy williams from VT.

he, uh, is the VT player that was thrown out of the gator bowl
on new years day. :eyes: ironic, huh?

8. This is how I see the first few picks going
1. The Jets trade up to get the No. 1 pick - select Reggie Bush.
2. New Orleans takes Vince Young.
3. Tennessee takes Matt Leinart.
4. Houston takes Debrickenshaw Fergeson, offensive tackle from (I believe) Virginia.

The reason I think this trade will go down is because Houston needs an offensive lineman a lot more than they need a quarterback or a runningback. I think the Jets will throw in a 2nd or 3rd round pick as well.

12. I'd still have to go with Leinart.
Vince Young has improved tremendously this year, but he'll never be the pro quarterback that Leinart will be. Granted, he has learned to pass and has a strong arm, but for a true quarterback who can run the team from the huddle and behind the center, Leinart is still better.

If I already had a good quarterback, I'd pick Bush. Assuming he stays healthy, he's going to have a great career.
