Remember that Italian soccer player who made a fascist salute in December?
Edited on Tue Jan-24-06 09:29 AM by dr.zoidberg
Well, he has received a one game ban, and a 10,000 euro fine. The article mentions that the fine is the second he has received for the same incident. Initially he made no apology, but apparently he has made one recently.

Article can be found here: http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=356189&cc=5901

1. Wonder if 10,000 is a big chunk of change for him....
...or if he's vastly overpaid like our pro sports figures.

2. Considering that he is a big star at Lazio...
he probably get paid a whole lot. Interestingly enough, Lazio fans support him no matte what because he was a Lazio ultra(a really fanatical fan) as a teenager.

3. Yeah, people will overlook a lot if someone is on their team
and doing well...can imagine that the fans of whoever is their main rival don't think too highly of his salute.

5. He is WAY overpaid
He was on far too much money when he played for the team I support (Sheffield Wednesday if you're wondering). Indeed one of the main reasons why Sheffield Wednesday have had so much trouble for the past few years is that we payed our players far too much and they were content to simply pick up massive pages, rather then earn them with results on the pitch.

As a result we have massive debts and have had 2 relegations since Di Canio walked out on us after pushing over the ref in a match against Arsenal in 1998. (Best thing that happened to us that season if you ask me.) Mind you, we won promotion last season and we are all hoping that Wednesday can get back on track now. :-)

4. Update: Di Canio(the player who made the gesture) is upset.
Di Canio is upset with the second fine and suspension that he is receiving.

From Mediawatch at football365.com, by way of The Sun:

'Paolo Di Canio has slammed a second successive punishment for making a Nazi salute. The Lazio star, 37, had tried to appeal against the one-match ban and £7,000 fine for his gesture in the Serie A clash against Livorno in December. He had already been fined £10,000 and given another ban for repeating the salute a week later against Juventus.

"Another injustice has taken place," said Di Canio. "Italy's shame continues and I will appeal to the Italian FA and to the Italian prosecutor."

6. I wonder.
Can we fine US players for religious gestures?
