Chaney RETIRES!!!
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=2366357

Longtime Temple coach Chaney retiresAssociated Press

PHILADELPHIA -- John Chaney retired Monday after 24 seasons as Temple's basketball coach, ending a Hall of Fame career in which his temper sometimes got the better of him.

The 74-year-old Chaney, a fiery sideline presence admired as much for his mentoring as his success on the court, guided Temple to five NCAA regional finals and 17 NCAA Tournament appearances and was twice the national coach of the year.

This season, Temple (17-14) made the NIT for the fifth straight season, a dramatic decline from when it was an NCAA Tournament regular.

"I have said all along that I would know when it would be time to step down and now is that time," Chaney said in a statement. "I want to thank Temple University, its fans and community for allowing me to do what I love for so long. It has never been a job for me, but a passion."

but the team ain't what it used to be. He's been on the sidelines ever since I can remember and it won't seem the same without him. Best wishes to him. :-(

13. It's a letdown, but not because of a hoped-for misspelling...
... Rather because college bball will be losing one of its wonderful people. He deserves a happy retirement though, so I can't really criticize him.

23. I noticed the spelling difference, but I was hoping
That the person who started this thread, in their glee, didn't pay attention to what they were doing. Oh, well, we can keep wishing. Personally, I think it's coming...or I should say, something's coming where Cheney will be leaving office early.

25. I snuck out of work and went to the press conference.
Chaney will be missed in Philadelphia and particular here in North Philly. It's been a fun 24 years of Temple Basketball, lots of highs and a few cringe-inducing moments. He was deservedly proud of himself and his teams but did admit the if look around with your flashlight, you'll "occasionally find me with my pants down".

In my opinion his lowest moment came when threatening the life of then-Umass Coach Calipari. The greatest moment was probably when he, um, threatened the life of then-Umass coach Calipari.

The only thing missing is a final-four appearance, going 0-5 in the elite-eight.

There's talk of Bob Huggins, but I don't think so. I'd like to see ex Temple assistant and current Trail-Blazers assistant Dean Dompolous as the replacement.

the other year. taking out Calipari would be a gift to mankind.
