ABC Staff Nuthugging Heat
Am I the only person who thought that throughout tonight's game the ABC commentators were nuthugging the Heat. First, they just could not stop talking about how nice and great D Wade and the other Heat players were. Next they made such a big deal of Wade playing hurt as if noone else in basketball plays hurt. Then they went on about how great of a player Shaq is. Also, they showed all those pictures of Wade, Shaq, and Posey. I do not remember the ABC commentators doing all this stuff when Dallas was playing on their home court in Dallas. I do not recall them showing pictures of the players. Maybe I just missed the pictures, but I cannot recall the ABC commentators showing the pictures of Dallas players.

The commentary team just made me sick tonight. I will admit that I was rooting for the Mavericks from the beginning of the series, but now I also want to Mavericks to win just to shut up the ABC team. In my opinion the ABC team were acting as if they wanted the Heat to win the series. Does anyone else think the commentary team was kissing the butts of the Heat? It just seemed to me like some of the stuff the commentary team was doing was just so unnecessary.

1. They showed lots of love...
for the Mavs in the first 2.5 games, which was well deserved. The Heat played great tonight -- particularly Shaq and Wade -- so the praise is justified. Networks do that with any team that's winning, and Hubie went out of his way to discuss how resilient the Mavs are at the end of tonight's game.

They're showing pics of the home team during the lead in to the commercial breaks, as best as I can figure; they did it w/ Mavs players.

If you'll notice, Wade himself downplayed his knee like the humble superstar he is.

Go Heat!

4. They did it all through the Pistons series too. It was all Shaq/Dwyane
It was just as bad. And no, they didn't reciprocate by being nice to the Pistons on their home court. And Dwyane Wade ALWAYS claims to be hurt or sick during the playoffs. We saw it last year too.

They are all about the superstars. They don't give a rat's ass for team play.

5. I said the same thing about Wade. He's always playing an

injury or illness angle. Can't stand that team. They get shoved down our throats too much. Watching pregame or halftime is torturous. Loved what Stackhouse did...

6. I know! He's only 24 years old! What a weakling.
I don't see how he'll even be able to play into his 30s, given how wracked with pain he always is.

I can't figure out if it's an excuse for if/when he loses, if he's just trying to emulate his hero Jordan who "played through the flu!" (yeah, right), or if he's doing this so that if he somehow is on a championship team some year, they can say, "Dwyane finally perservered through YEARS of bad luck...."

7. Wow. We think alike. I was just telling a buddy that if he lasts

more than a couple years at this rate it will be a miracle. He seems to embellish every little tap or contact. It's a shame because he is a great player but, c'mon, enough already! So damn sick of the Jordan references too...

14. It doesn't matter
If Wade only played 3 more years, he'd make enough money to be one of the richest men in Miami.

It seems like someone always has to find fault with the best players.

18. Oh, that's right. I forgot that the NBA was dead to me!
I got mad all over again watching the Dwyane Drool going on at ABC.

Of course I'm a bitter Pistons' fan! Although now I am becoming a bitter Dallas fan (I don't normally like teams from Texas, but I DO like Mark Cuban).

11. No...
It just proves AGAIN that the media slobbers over spotlight hogging so called 'superstars' at the expense of teams that win with team play. The Mavs play team ball without a megastar and the media can't figure out what to do with that.

I'm a Pistons fan and I'm disappointed but not bitter. We had a bad series in the conference finals and we lost. BUT the Pistons offseason won't be fraught with bickering among superstars and coaches, demands for trades because of personal animosities, or the acquisition of someone who wants to run the show. We will re-sign Ben Wallace, keep the starting five intact, and shore up the bench. Then return to playing team basketball. I, for one, can hardly wait.

13. Dirk Nowitzki isn't a "megastar"?
Edited on Sun Jun-18-06 09:08 PM by jakefrep
He sure looks like one to me.

Besides, the allegedly superior "teams" lost to the supposedly inferior "superstar-dominated" outfits. Even much-maligned Shaq and Kobe figured out the teamwork thing well enough to win three championships with the Lakers.

17. I don't think the media put Nowitzki on the same level as Shaq and Wade
And Shaq and Kobedid win three championships with the Lakers until their squabbling went to Olympic heights in 2004. No one gave the Pistons a chance in those Finals and they walked -- almost literally -- away with the championship.

15. They "slobbered" all over...
Jason Terry tonight until Dwyane Wade took over the game. Oh, and the Heat are leading the series because not only do they have a superstar, but also Heat role players like Haslem, Posey and even an ancient Gary Payton know when to step it up. They're doing okay playing "team" ball.

Your Pistons will be fine, but it sure seemed to me like they partly lost because they bickered with the coach.

12. A great piece on history of Finals TV coverage. ABC gets a low grade....
Edited on Sat Jun-17-06 02:42 PM by zonkers
From its announcers, to its camera angles, to its lack of replays and more....this article articulates what I have often felt is wrong with finals coverage, especially this part.....

"The constant scorebox in the corner of the screen was not something NBC liked to use until the final minutes of a close game, when it was absolutely necessary (and only in their final years). They would much prefer, like those that came before them, to flash the score across the bottom of the screen while teams crossed half-court. However, while every other team sport acquired a constant running time and score somewhere on the screen, it seems to hurt basketball more than it helps it. Why? Because a watched pot never boils, and basketball has the slowest-moving clock of any sport. Nothing takes away from a tide-turning three or a back-breaking dunk more than seeing in the corner of your screen at the same time that there is still 6:42 left in the first quarter and the score is only 11-8.

The game seems to stretch on forever as you can't help but stare at that corner and wait and hope for the clock to tick down to "crunch time." The scorebox has since morphed into a more fashionable line score at the bottom of the screen, but remains no less of a constant reminder of the irrelevance of the great shot you just saw go down. When the time and score was out of your way, you could appreciate good basketball for what it was, and the occasional reminders between possessions left no lingering effects."

19. No, you're NOT the only one who noticed!
It's SICKENING!

But yeah, they did show some pics of Josh Howard when they told about how he was born bow-legged and had his legs broken as an infant/toddler (?). IMO that's a much better story than a multi-millionaire star athlete having a kidney transplant and coming back from it. *insert wanking smiley*

21. TNT was way better
Just like as always, ABC sucks

Unless Miami wins on the road, the service of the fans and home-field advantage is the winner here. The Mavs choked game five but those game 7's are always better like this anyways. The #1 thing that is seeking to be accomplished through the NBA's entire season is entertainment for audience that makes it money.
I am looking on the bright side of it all for this simple fact that at least they don't have Al Michaels hanging out :-)
