3. Fight broke out with the Pistons fans and the Pacers
Artest took a cheap foul on Ben Wallace with 45 seconds left in the game, Wallace went after him and had to be restrained. He was livid. Never seen him like that. Artest laid on the scorer's table with a big smirk on his face until he got hit in the face with a cup full of beer and charged into the stands and punched a fan and all hell broke loose.

6. Wow.
I watched most of the first half and it looked like Detroit was cold so I turned off the T.V.

I'll have to catch SportsCenter tomorrow. That's crazy.

Artest is an amazing player. He's got a tiny bit of Rodman-style self-destruct tendency too, doesn't he.

7. Crazy shit
I work as an intern for the sports desk at our local CBS affiliate, and almost the entire station was watching that thing go down. Couldn't believe it. We cut a clip from the ESPn feed, so we got some good shots of that. Ron Artest was really laying into some of those fans. Unfuckinbelievable.

Honestly though, is anyone really that surprised that Artest was involved?

8. He went after the fans, but he sure didn't want any of Ben Wallace
I've never seen Ben get that angry. He's a good guy. His older brother just died last week. Wonder if Artest said something about that to set him off or if it was just the foul.

Still no excuse for the fans throwing shit at Artest like that. Someone even threw a metal chair at the end and injured a Palace worker. It was like something out of pro wrestling, but real. Rick Mahorn, the Pistons radio announcer and legendary Bad Boy was even in the crowd trying to break up the fighting.

10. That is the ugliest athlete/fan interaction I think I've ever seen.
ESPN just had some commentary from Jim Gray (who was there.) He seemed genuinely shaken by the incident even after almost a couple hours had passed.

I'm with Stephen A Smith, this one is almost completely on the fans. It was a truly sickening display of everything that is wrong with humanity.

Certainly a black eye that Detroit sports didn't need.

11. Artest shouldn't have gone into the stands for getting beer thrown on him
That's a HUGE no-no in sports, and should result in a gigantic suspension.

12. I'd be shocked if he gets less than 15 games
Edited on Sat Nov-20-04 01:24 AM by Mojambo
There will be quite a few people going to court/jail in this one.

I had a discussion with a freind about this type of stuff after the last big one (baseball) and his point was that fans aren't going to learn NOT to throw stuff at players until one of them has their face rearranged by a player. I wish it hadn't happened, but I hope some fans took note...

The whole scene was Ugly with a capital U.

13. Only if the 2 punks that sucker punched him
get charged with assault. TWO guys hit Artest in the head from behind. Cheap shot MFers.

17. Defense of Artest
Ron Artest was jumped by a very wound up Ben Wallace for a slightly hard foul. Instead of reacting with his typical anger he withheld this and laid down on the scorer's table. I found this to be very impressive. Not until he was attacked by a thrown cup did he erupt. Yes, he should have still not gone into the stands. But I truly believe the fans were more to blame here than any player. That kind of behavior is despicable. Artest, Wallace, and Jackson should all be fined and suspended, but there are fans that need to go to jail.
Either way it is not a good day for the NBA.

15. the game's on again right now
On ESPN2. I'm recording it for further analysis, but so far, from the video, I'm putting most of this on the Detroit players and fans.

I'm not a fan of Artest's, but he showed remarkable (for him) composure until the fans started laying into him.

As someone else said upthread, it's a shame, but fans aren't going to learn until someone gets seriously hurt. Throwing beer like that was just ridiculous, every person who threw things at the players should be placed on at least a year ban from the arena.

16. Fans need to realize they are not part of the game.
The incident was largely over when that dipshit threw the beer at Artest.
