Dolphins general manager Randy Mueller and Kansas City president Carl Peterson continue to discuss the Trent Green trade, but there has been no movement to suggest the sides are closer to a deal now than a month ago.
Peterson confirmed the talks in an interview with the Kansas City Star. He continues to ask for a second-round pick for the soon-to-be 37-year-old Green. The negotiating stance is so entrenched that Peterson suggested he would wait until after the draft, if necessary, to get his price.
''I told Randy that they made a great trade with New England,'' Peterson said, referring to a recent deal that sent receiver Wes Welker to the Patriots. ``They got for what we would consider a third wide receiver and kick-return specialist second- and seventh-round draft picks. I told him that I think a starting quarterback is worth that.
``Now we need to work toward something that's fair. We'll talk again this week. Whether it gets done before the draft or not, I can't say. It may happen this week, or it may not happen until after the draft.''
The Dolphins have offered a seventh-round pick for Green but might sweeten that offer. They are not likely, however, to give up a second-rounder.
The more likely scenario is that Miami gives up a mid-round pick this year and a conditional pick for 2008 that will be determined by how much Green plays in 2007. The Dolphins would likely either trade or release Daunte Culpepper after acquiring Green.
