Race In the NBA
There is a new study, which was conducted by a University of Pennsylvania professor and a Cornell University graduate student, that claim there is bias in foul calls depending on the race of the refs working a game. The study claims that both white and black refs call more fouls against players of the opposite race. The study goes on to claim that white refs do this more than the black refs. NBA officials disputes the claims in the study saying the author's used the wrong information. NBA officials claims the authors made conclusions based on the race of the refs working the game and not on the refs who actually made calls during the game. NBA officials also said they conducted their own study which gave different conclusions. So, what do other think? A link to the full story is below.

1. It's not surprising.
I think that there are related issues in high school and college. I can remember when a college coach came to scout one of my nephews, and after the game, said that it was obvious the officials were holding my nephew to a different standard than the others.

2. Call more fouls?
Are they legitimate fouls? Are refs calling a foul a foul? I find the study laughable as given. This is what comes out of the prestigious University of Pennsylvania? Lets add to the excitement. What are the races of the professor and the grad student? Do they have friends of the opposite race? What organizations do they belong to? Were they abused as children?

3. At any rate if they are biased or not, they would still suck regardless
It would probably be a good bet to think there is elemental part mixed up in genetics even. Every other animal species differentiates among their kind so why would others think humans are different

The really good teams can go into a hostile environment beat the other team, the refs and the fans all at the same time

4. What LOUSY methodology!
So they read box scores, determined the race of the referees and used that to extrapolate?! WTF? How do they know which referee called which foul against which player on an individual basis?

This study won't pass peer review, nor should it.

It's provocative, but ultimately worthless.

I am no fan of the NBA referee. I think they stink out loud for the most part. But closet racists? Nah.
