NHL playoffs Round 3!
I say Ottawa kicks the Sabers in 6 games and Anaheim beats Detroit, also in 6 games.

1. Didn't you take San Jose in Round 2?
I'll stick with the Wings. In five games.

2. I did, and I still think they lost because they caved in.
But Anaheim is even more solid then San José. I do think that the Wings have decent chance of beating them, though.

3. I think they lost because they melted down
Just like Calgary. Couldn't handle the pressure so they just started hacking.

5. Except that they had a much better team than Calgary.
But in essence, you may be right.

4. Barry Melrose picked Anaheim
Sorry about that, Anaheim!

The Wings are playing great. The article in the (Seattle) paper harps on about their age, but ignores the fact that they also have a lot of good, young players that have come up through their system, who balance well with the veterans.

I don't think the Sharks "caved". I agree with the analysts who said that their coach probably shouldn't have called out their stars in the playoffs, but I think that the Wings were ultimately more focussed and played through to the end of every period - even last night, when they controlled almost the entire game, Samuelsson was still pressing enough to score with 8 seconds left in the period. In the last two games in San Jose, they scored with 4 seconds, 32 seconds, and 8 seconds left in various periods. Also, once Homer came back, things really shifted.

I'm pleased to see the Wings back in the conference finals. Everyone acts as if the Wings are the Yankees, but in truth, the Wings have only won 3 Stanley Cups since the mid 1950s, while the Yankees have won approximately 25% of all World Series ever.

GO WINGS!!!!

7. So you're going with Barry's pick? (at least in the west)
Did you like his new slicked-down mullet?

9. To be honest, I don't recall who Barry Melrose is. But yeah, I think
the Ducks have proven to be a tough team in the playoffs, and I'm not big on picking both the number 1 seeds.

13. I was hoping for that Original Six matchup too...
maybe next year? :toast:

I think the last time there were two O6 teams in it, one of them was the Rangers. '79 Rangers vs. Canadiens I think.

14. It's been a long time, that's for sure
But if there is any O6 team in the finals, I will always root for them over anyone else. Hooray for the cities that carried hockey's torch through the lean years!

17. I think I'm going to end up rooting for Ottawa no matter who they play.
I like Detroit, always have, but they've won it enough over the years.

And I hope any team named the Ducks never even gets to look closely at the Stanley Cup.

So Ottawa it will be.

Plus they are a blast to watch play.Strong, fast, exciting hockey.

18. I don't know offhand when Ottawa last won it
But Detroit has only won it three times in the last 51 years; it's not as if we're perennial Cup champions!

The 1997 Cup was the first in my lifetime.

19. Ottawa last won it in 1927
Which was the first year the NHL awarded the Stanley Cup (before then it was awarded to the winner of a series between the NHL winner and Pacific Coast Hockey League winner. The PCHL dissolved in '26).

No Cup for you!

:)

20. I know, it's so sad. Really, it was hard to watch.
Even with the flurry of goals at the end, which got my hopes up. It would have been great to see teams from two cities with long-time hockey tradition going at it. Instead, we get a team from a fine, proud city with a rich tradition and a team from......a strip mall.

I've been to Ottawa, charming city, and I've been to "The Pond" which is stuck out on a highway amidst a bunch of chain stores and restaurants. No comparison.
