Tom Brady was the 223rd pick in the 2000 draft
WTF? How did a superstar like this nearly slip through the cracks? The Patriots picked him almost as an afterthought. Of course, in 2000 nobody knew he was an uncut diamond.

Meantime the much ballyhooed Cade McNown and Ryan Leaf turned out to be wet farts. Even Eli Manning looks like he doesn't have it.

Since Brady is a superstar that almost didn't get drafted, it makes me wonder (in any sport) how many potential superstars never got a chance to play. I'd say it's probably dozens. That's a pity.

Brady is I think the best quarterback since Joe Montana, and the true equal of Johnny Unitas and Bart Starr.

1. I know
Brady is a 6th round pick who came off the bench after Drew Bledsoe got clobbered in the second game of the 2001 season. Not only did he take them to an 11-5 record, he won a Super Bowl with a team that was supposed to be a lost cause. The kid is 27, and has two Super Bowl rings and two MVPs. He can only get better. He's already gotten a seat in Canton. Makes you wonder, doesn't it?

4. wow, he's got maybe 14 more years in the NFL. The sky is the limit.
The guys is super. I think there is a good chance he will clobber the Eagles. Yeah, he'll be in Canton around 2023, after a stellar career.

2. I remember when the Patriots released Bledsoe.....
I thought they were nuts. Boy, was I wrong.

And to think he's only 26. He ties Starr for the most consecutive championship wins if he wins the SuperBowl.

I wonder what he'll be signing for when this contract expires....

5. He'll be a zillionaire just for endorsements. (Sirius, etc.)
When is his current contract up?

3. Eli is young, and the Giants really do suck
But Brady is so cool under pressure.

Remember that scene in the first Spider-Man where the bully punches Peter Parker and his fist moves so slow (because Parker has lightning reflexes) he can just move out of the way? I bet Tom Brady sees a defense that slow, or something. He's legit.

The Pats held the most prolific offense this season to 3 points, then dropped 41 on the #1 defense this season. Wow.

6. that's unreal. 41 against Pittsburgh.
As Bob Boudelang might say, Bob Belichick is a JEENIUS.

7. Yeah, & for most of his college career he played back-up. To whom you ask
What's his name? Griese--can't think of his first name.

Really does make you wonder.

BTW, Montana went pretty low in the draft, too.

8. Brian Griese at first, then Drew Henson
Neither of whom has done jack in the league yet. As an ND fan, I'm pretty pumped to have Charlie Weis roaming our sidelines next year. ND is in a pretty similar situation in that they have good but not great players, and just need some good coaching.

9. As an ND alum, I concur!
The Pats offensive is similar to what I consider the traditional ND offense is (or, should I say, was?), since they're both cold weather teams.

12. Brady backed up Griese at Michigan
For two years (and Griese was the Rose Bowl MVP and took UM to a national championship so he was no slouch either). But then Brady was supposed to back up whiz kid Drew Henson and beat him fair and square for the starting job and Henson was a backup for two years until Brady graduated.

In his second start ever, Brady and Michigan were beaten by Donovan McNabb and Syracuse, in September 1998. It's payback time -- go Pats!

13. My bad, I thought Henson had the job
I thought the main reason Brady dropped was that Henson and him split time/alternated starts, and he didn't get the time to prove himself. He wasn't a college star, but I still thought he was better than a 200s pick.

16. They tried to split time
but Brady kept outperforming Henson so he was kept in as the starter. I think he probably dropped because Michigan is like New England; they stress team not individual stats so Brady was overlooked a lot.

I'm a Michigan alumna and have been following Michigan football forever; Tom Brady is one of my all-time favorite QBs ever -- right after Rick Leach, our last true option QB.

17. As an ND fan, I can't stand UM, but Brady is good
Good point on the team ahead of stats, that would explain a lot. That also might be a reason why UF players don't do as well once they get away from the fun 'n gun.

19. I'm a UM fan, obviously but ND is my second favorite
And I love it, love it, love it when they beat Michigan State!

ND and Michigan have a lot of similarities; ND emphasizes team too. In fact, Michigan taught ND to play football and lent them the blueprints from their stadium (now known as The Big House) to build ND Stadium.

10. other "missed" draftees
Kurt Warner- Arena football, out of the game. Best quarterback in football for two years.
Favre was a second rounder.

11. If the Patriots lose to the Eagles (Yeah I know - impossible)
Would that make Brady more human? Would McNabb take his place as the best QB in the league? Oh its all speculation. Everyone knows that the Eagles can't win. The game is only being played as a courtesy to the advertisers who already spent their money. Final score Patrios 225 - Eagles 6.

Yeah Right.

See you in Jacksonville.

And that won't beat the spread.

14. Brady was not the prototype NFL QB.
He was too thin and not strong enough. But he had the brains and work ethic to make the most of his situation. And now he is heavier and stronger. His deep ball is terrific now and he throws strong accurate passes.

He is not a Bart Starr or Peyton Manning. He is a Tom Brady and probably will become a model QB in his own right like a Marino, Montana, or a Unitas.

18. Michigan QBs are always underrated
It's amazing how well most of UofM's QBs do in the NFL when there isn't much spotlight on them when they play college ball. The only overrated Michigan QB I think is Drew Henson - but to be fair he didn't play many games for the Wolverines and was playing baseball for a while instead.

Although if Chad Henne continues on the path he's on, UofM might actually get a QB drafted in the first round.
