Rob Parker Vs. Tiger Woods
Edited on Thu Jan-17-08 12:15 PM by erpowers
Today on the ESPN show "First Take" Rob Parker called Tiger Woods the most sorry athlete. Parkers comments were in response to Tiger Woods, as of yet, making no comment on the fact that the latest cover of the golf magazine "GolfWeek" has a hanging noose on it. The cover seems to be an indication that the magazine will take up the issue of the comments made about Woods by Golf Channel analyst Kelly Tilghman. An official from the PGA spoke out criticizing the cover of the magazine, but as mentioned earlier Tiger Woods has yet to comment on the issue.

Parker went on to explain his comments by saying that Woods has a duty to come out and talk about the cover of the magazine. Parker did also say that he was not trying to get Woods to talk about all his political views, but that he (Parker) thought Woods should talk about issues like this. It is Parkers opinion that Woods cares more about getting endorsements then criticizing the cover of GolfWeek Magazine.

How do you feel about Parker's comments? Do you think he was right to make the comments? Do you think people should just leave Tiger Woods alone no matter what he decides not to speak out about?

So far there is no video of the issue. Maybe there will be video later in the day or maybe ESPN will put the video and one of its websites. Also, anyone who wants to see the discussion can try to watch or record the show "1st and 10" at 3:00 eastern time.

The link below is to the GolfWeek Magazine website, which has a picture of the cover, the story about Tilghman, and and editorial. Just scroll down the page and you will see the cover.

1. Rob Parker Should Just Shut Up
Tiger already did say something. He said, "Drop it."

2. Tiger has the right to use his influence for the causes of HIS choosing
Not the causes favored by the media, sports or otherwise. Tiger, understandably, doesn't want to be Al Sharpton-Lite.

Rob Parker is a twit. It's disappointing - Detroit is a good sports city with two major newspapers, but neither has a decent sportswriter/columnist.

4. He was a sports columnist for the Detroit News...
...and now, apparently, a contributor to ESPN.

5. According to today's Pardon The Interruption show

the Golfweek editor has been fired.

If the Golf Channel announcer suggested the younger players "mug" or "kidnap" Woods instead of "lynch" him, it would have resulted in a belly laugh. But her choice of word did have a racial undercurrent. And what I think is even more unfortunate, it distracted from the very legitimate point was trying to make: the rest of the field can no longer conceal their frustration at being unable to compete with Tiger consistently.

I'm sure Tiger dismissed the incident because he was satisfied that there was no "criminal intent." Thus, I thought the Golf Channel's two-week suspension of the announcer was a bit much. Golfweek blew it completely out of proportion because the "problem" with Tiger is NOT that he's not white, but that he's not crummy at what he does.
