so how do you think the Boss would react if...
the Mets ended up signing Pedro Martinez? http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/nym/news/nym_news.jsp?ymd=20041127&content_id=916611&vkey=news_nym&fext=.jsp
I think it would piss him off to no end, and therefore should be done!

1. the other thing that would send Steinbrenner ballistic is . . .
if the Red Sox somehow managed to land Randy Johnson . . . won't happen, but fun to think about . . . :)

2. if the mets are smart . . . .
they'll at least jack up the price 8 or 10 million bucks before they get outbid.

3. What I really want to see...
the Mets and Yankees get into a bidding war, the Yanks pay waaay too much for him and then have Pedro pull a Giambi

4. both Pedro and the Unit could be overly venturesome next year
Pedro isn't the most durable pitcher in the universe (less than 200 innings 4 of the last 5 seasons), and can be quite the distraction in the clubhouse.

The Big Unit was very UN-Unit-like at times last season - which is to say he was merely human at time - but he'll turn 42 during the next season, so maximum circumspections is certainly appropriate. A team could easily wind up holding the bag for a 3 year/45 million dollar contract, and the guy turn to mush in May.
