PP's for 9/20/08. Super Derby and Mass Cap
Mass Cap at Suffolk Downs - http://www.brisnet.com/bris_link/pdfs/winstar_farm_llc_124843.pdf

Stakes races at Louisiana Downs inc. Super Derby - http://www.brisnet.com/promos/pictures/ladpick4_092008.pdf

Suffolk is in danger of becoming a track with no future. Lot's of Mass horsemen/women have been leaving the state for tracks receiving money from slots/gaming. It's a shame really. The Mass Cap is a very historic race and has been won by the likes of Seabiscuit, War Admiral, Cigar, etc. I'd hate to see it discontinued. If you're in the Boston area, I'd like to urge you to go to the track today. Bet an exacta box of Commentator - Riversrunrylee.

1. Sorry about your track...
I went through that years ago with arguably one of the prettiest tracks in the country---Hialeah. The demise of that track was heartbreaking.

Now---for the MASS Cap.... God I love these kind of races because I can see it run in my head..... You're two horses, Commentator and Riversrunrylee will lead the pack and battle like hell to the last furlong---- unfortunately they won't have enough to last and Cuba will blow by them and win by 2 to 3 lengths....

I usually bet on the nose and I expect Cuba to be about 3/1. If that's the case maybe 40 down to win for a cool 120 profit. Then again, a tri key, or a 20 dollar exacta might be the way to go.

So---
Cuba
Commentator
River whatever it's name is...

That's how I see it.

Thanks for the chart.

3. I'm a Detroit boy.
I just hate to see an historic old track like Suffolk close it's doors or fade into obscurity. The Mass Cap used to be a coveted race.

Your Dr. Pleasure pick looks smart. If the 2 speed horses burn each other up he looks to be the guy who'll pick up the pieces. He's got Oxley and Ward as his connections and they always have a live horse when they ship in.

So, I'm throwing Dr, Pleasure in my exacta part wheel. If it ends up they way I think it will it won't be a big score but if that local horse can finish it'll be nice.

Good Luck.

4. MI Sire Stakes finals tonite at Hazel Park
I've got nothing in but, my business partner has a 2 YO colt in the pacing final. He's a long shot but, my partner has never been in a race of this stature before. This is a big deal at my house. I hope some of you horseplayers will help me cheer Let's Go Blue tonite in Race 6. He drew the 2 hole so he's got a shot at picking up a check. Post Time: 7:25pm

33. Yes, I did. I wish I'd have known your folks were there....
I'd have tried to meet them. Did they have a good time?

No one at the barn thought that this horse was gonna be good enough last March. He suprised us. The big plan with him was to get him to Toledo for those OH breds vs MI breds races. We thought with a name like Let's Go Blue he'd be a fan favorite.

5. Commentator for the win
Dr. Pleasure for the place with Cuba up for third. Looks like a chalky race to me. I don't see anyone running with Commentator on the front end.

Super Derby tri: Macho Again, My Pal Charlie, Forest Command. Nice day of stakes down there in Shreveport!

23. And at 7 years old too
I think he'll be dangerous in the Breeders' Cup, wherever he goes (that is, if he goes). Starting to like this old guy a lot. Can you imagine him and Big Brown up near the lead together? Would be something to see.

8. Proud Spell beaten in Cotillion
By three with Seattle Smooth getting the win. Not sure why Larry Jones thinks Proud Spell has earned the Eclipse. She'll bounce back though. I bet she goes to the BC "Ladies Classic" now.

10. Tough Tiz's Sis retired after injury
Only two weeks after a dazzling victory at Belmont Park in the Grade 1 Ruffian Handicap, Tough Tiz's Sis is out of the Breeders' Cup with a career-ending injury following a five-furlong workout Saturday at Belmont.

According to trainer Bob Baffert, Tough Tiz's Sis took an awkward step at the end of the workout. Baffert said an exam revealed the "beginning of a condylar fracture" in her right front. "It makes you sick to your stomach; she was peaking at the right time."

Tough Tiz's Sis delivered the best performance of her career in the Sept. 6 Ruffian, which she won by 12 1/4 lengths over a sloppy track while earning a 113 Beyer Speed Figure. The 4-year-old Tough Tiz's Sis was scheduled to return to California on Monday; her workout Saturday - five furlongs in 1:01.80 breezing - was merely a maintenance drill.

Baffert said Tough Tiz's Sis was scheduled for surgery Sunday and a screw would be inserted in the fracture. Although the injury does not necessarily end a horse's career, Baffert said Tough Tiz's Sis "has done enough" and would be retired.

almost worth putting something on a horse like Cuba just because. A guy or gal wouldn't even have to make a plunge for a nice payday.

16. She and Zada Belle dueled for the lead
up the backstretch and through the turn, Indian Blessing then drawing off to win by several - five or six lenghts maybe? I expected Porte Bonheur to put in a good chase but it never materialized.

MassCap coming up!

25. Yeah, another rough trip for Macho
He seems to find 'em - checked pretty hard there on the turn. Don't think anyone was catching Charlie today. At least I had the right three up top; dang, that's the kinda bet I would have boxed too had I gone on down to Shreveport ... paid $116.80. New Super Derby record: 1:48.36. Not bad for a first stakes win.

he never got much of a chance to run but the winner set a record so what can you do?

Off to watch my partner's colt go for the big money at Hazel.

And it looks like the 'Canes have everything under control.

28. What a fun race to watch, Commentator's
I only got to see it on the computer this AM, but still fun to watch! Sorry for any betting losses here, but I was cheering on Commentator because he's a Distorted Humor and a gelding and seven years old.

Sid, glad to hear your partner's horse, Blue, did well. As you know, I am partial to horses with Blue in the name - always "bet" on them.

29. Big party at the barn this morning
it started at 6am. Mucking stalls.

That 4th place finish is a good result. He was beaten a total of 2 3/4 lengths. A nice payday too. I couldn't be more proud of Mike and what he did with that horse. That race went in 1:55.1.

Commentator is turning into a formidable handicap horse. Like aaronbee's said, he actually rated yesterday.

30. I think I'm gonna fuckin' cry
Hall of Fame jockey Earlie Fires dismounted after a fifth-place finish in a starter-allowance race late Sunday afternoon at Arlington Park and said he was retiring.

Manchu Prince, Fires's mount in his final race, finished fifth after a fairly tough trip, but plenty of other Fires-ridden horses finished first during a long, long career that began in 1964. The final tally of winners, in fact, will come in at 6,470, the ninth-most ever by a Thoroughbred jockey.

The Arkansas-born and bred Fires is 61, and was the leading apprentice rider in the nation in 1965. He has won more races at Arlington Park - 2,886 - than any other jockey, and had a resurgent final season at Arlington, where Fires booted home 35 winners this summer.

http://drf.com/news/article/98399.html

Good for him but, he was such a part of racing while I was growing up. Great Chicago guy and always dangerous. He'd get some descent mounts when the graded stakes races would be run at Arlington and no matter how much of a long shot his horse was he'd get a piece of it. Usually. A couple of years ago I saw him give Pat Day everything he wanted in the stretch when Pat had flown in to ride a big horse in the IL Derby. Sportsman's Park is gone and now so is Earlie Fires. Chicago Racing will miss him.

from back in the days I went to Arlington in '84 and thereabouts. He has been a fixture there in Chicago forever. I can remember Phil Georgeff calling his rides. I didn't know he was born in Arkansas.
