Phillip Fulmer Steps Down
Source: ESPN

Phillip Fulmer, who a decade ago brought Tennessee its first national championship in 47 years, will not return as the Volunteers' coach next year, multiple sources told ESPN.com.
An announcement is being planned for later Monday at Neyland Stadium. Fulmer, who has won 150 games at his alma mater and is the dean of SEC coaches, met with Tennessee officials Monday morning, and they reached a mutual agreement that it would be best for all parties if Fulmer did not return next season.

The sides also agreed that Fulmer would coach the remainder of the 2008 season.

3. Lute Olson, hall of fame coach from the U of Az retired suddenly too.
It led to several key prospects transfering to other schools. Under Lute, the U of A had one of the best, if not the best, record over the last 20 odd years.

7. Thanks CPF for a great career at UT
Edited on Mon Nov-03-08 01:04 PM by Threedifferentones
The past few years definitely hurt his legacy, as there are now several SEC coaches who hold dominant records over him. Still this is a classy move that will preserve the memory of the late nineties when UT dominated CFB. Go Vols, Bama sucks.

8. He's got a hell of a record.....
and I'm really sorry to see his coaching career end badly. Seems the time had come and he's made millions coaching UT but I find it a shame he couldn't have gone out on an up note being an Alum and all. Also, thought I'd read he wished to be UT's winning-est coach, over Neyland, which won't happen.

A very successful SEC coach I know also said he always thought Phil was straight up and never cheated.
