1. Cleveland Browns fire coach Romeo Crennel
Edited on Mon Dec-29-08 10:34 AM by Scurrilous
<snip>

"The Cleveland Browns have fired coach Romeo Crennel following a 4-12 season.

The firing came one day after general manager Phil Savage was dismissed. Owner Randy Lerner met with Crennel on Monday morning and the team announced the coach's firing moments before a news conference was to begin.

Crennel had three years left on a contract extension he signed in January after the Browns went 10-6 and just missed the playoffs.

Crennel went 24-40 in four seasons with the Browns, who entered 2008 with huge expectations but collapsed amid a series of injuries and uneven play on offense and defense. They didn't score an offensive touchdown while losing their last six games and posted their fifth season of at least 10 losses in six years.

Although Crennel's dismissal had been expected for some time, Lerner waited until after the season out of respect for the 61-year-old coach and former defensive coordinator, who had never been a head coach at any level before taking over the Browns in 2005.

Lerner is expected to make a strong run at former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher, who has been working as a studio analyst for CBS since stepping down following the 2006 season. Cowher has given no indication he is ready to return to coaching."

AP source: Lions fire Marinelli after winless year

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP)—A person familiar with the decision says the Detroit Lions have fired coach Rod Marinelli.

The firing comes on the morning after the Lions became the first team in NFL history to finish with an 0-16 record.

The person, who said the move was made Monday morning, spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because an announcement had not been made.

The Lions completed their winless season with a loss to Green Bay on Sunday, pushing aside Tampa Bay’s 1976 season of 0-14 as the league’s worst.

Marinelli won only one of his last 24 games and was 10-38 in three years after former team president Matt Millen gave the former Buccaneers assistant his first head coaching job.

2. Why?
Was he the one that traded for the guy who threw nine TDs and 18 INTs in his last 12 games, and cut the QB that led his team to the division title?

3. LOL...all those coaches that supposedly were the ones making Belichick look good. They all suck now.
Mangini, Crennel, Weiss. Left the Pats for all the cookies and only got crumbs.

4. Plus it was supposed to be its only cause Belichick has Brady..
That the Pats were great.I don't like the man but he's obviously a great coach. This might have been his best effort yet.

5. Bill is arrogant dick of epic proportions.
But yes, he's also one of the best coaches to come down the pike in awhile as well. I agree that this year was one of his best efforts. 11-5 with the key injuries they had is excellent, especially when you factor in how badly all the opponents must have wanted to kick them while they were down.

It's a bummer they're done, but thems the breaks. I had more fun watching them this year than I did last year, so I won't complain.

Of course, it doesn't hurt to still have the Celtics and Bruins playing awesome to soften the blow. It's a rough town to be a sports fan in, I'll tell ya.

6. Mangini A Good Coach
I understand what you mean about what people said about Belichick; however, Mangini is a good coach. I contend the Jets management is to blame for what happened this year. In addition, Mangini went 9-7 this year. That is still a winning record. The Jets should have just stuck with Pennington once they made their team better. Brett Favre partly cost the Jets that game yesterday. Most likely if the team had had Pennington or a good quarterback they would have been able to make the playoffs. Therefore, Mangini is actually a good coach without Belichick, he just needs a good team and quarterback.

7. Actually, I agree with you.
I was just being obnoxious, as this is the Sports Forum, after all. ;)

The Jets will regret this whole Favre affair, if they don't already.

17. Yeah...I bet it makes Coach Palpatine smile.
And it's why Josh McDaniels won't get a job offer anytime soon.

8. Does anyone think he'll be hired as a head coach in the NFL any time soon?
He's a known rat and I think it will be some time before he's hired.

9. I bet he's hired fairly quickly.
Too many teams will be looking for new coaches next year. He could be Satan himself, if some owner thinks he'll help them win he'll be hired.

12. He could be hired as a head coach, but
Edited on Mon Dec-29-08 09:48 PM by hughee99
NO ONE will hire him as an assistant coach again. Owners don't care that he's a rat, but other coaches won't trust him. Regardless of his role in spygate, he was trying to lure away players (and staff) to follow him when he was preparing to leave for the Jets.

I think he'll end up coaching in college.

which I assume means they're desperate now that The Jawbone blew 'em off.
