Can someone explain to me (RIGHT FUCKING NOW) the rule of The REAL SPORTS FAN,
that says that you have to root for the team of the city you live in.

Now if someone could explain to me as someone who lives equi-distant between to city with professional sports teams. Let's delve into the issue a little further:

Football: We have the Ravens and Redskins, which by default would also include the Indianapolis Colts and Cleveland Browns. PICK 'em. This brings up a whole nother conundrum in that I lived equidist between Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Indianapolis. Add to that fact, that the old Cleveland Browns are now in Baltimore and the old Baltimore Colts are in Indianapolis and the Cincinnati Bengals were formed by the former owner of the Browns. To top it off, the original Cleveland team (RAMS) moved to LA and became the LA Rams who are now the St. Louis Rams who replace the St. Louis Cardinals who moved to Arizona. Don't forget that if I'm rooting for a team that played in LA moved back to Oakland which means that I should be rooting for a team in the bay area. I guess that means I should be a 49'ers and rooting for a team that was owned by a convicted felon.

Baseball: We have the Baltimore Orioles and Washington Reagan Nationals, which by default would include the St. Louis Browns and Montreal Expos. I could root for the Phillies, but then if I did that, I would have to consider the Athletics who moved to Kansas City (oh shit, now do I need to be a Royals fan??) and then to Oakland. Which means that I really should be rooting for a team in the bay area and teh roid ragers by that logic.

Basketball: Well, there's only one here, the Baltimore/Washington Bullets/Wizards. So that's easy, I root for the Celtics!!

Maybe the choices in teams are not so bad!

1. How does your rooting for Dallas
fit into all this....what connection to do you have to the felons?

2. Well, I'm waiting for the "Fan rules of a Real Sports fan" that you
referred to earlier. I guess, the connection would be to the owner of the 49'ers.

3. You have a connection to the Yorks?
to former owner Eddie DeBartolo?

Have you lived in Texas?

Were you born in Texas?

Just what is your connection to the Cowboys?...If you have none, you are a bandwagon jumper and have violated the rules that cboy layed out.

5. Here is the most relevant portion
of cboy's post and one that I happen to agree with...

You should cheer for the teams from where you're from and you should be consistent like me in that regard.

9. Any team that has a distinct connection to where you are from
or presently live would be, in my mind, acceptable to root for...

You still have not answered my question about your connection to Dallas...do you have trouble comprehending the question or, as I suspect, are you avoiding it?

and am still ed from two teams, then what the fuck is your suggestion cboynupton??

You second question is irrelevant, cboy.

11. Any of those teams would be okay to root for
just as I, being from the Bay Area, have a choice of the Giants or the A's, the Raiders or the 49ers.

However, it is not okay to root for some club 2000 miles away that you saw on TV.

:hi:

I can still be a Cowboys fan and you can still be a forty-niners fan!

19. I root for the Braves
It's actually just over 1100 miles driving to Turner Field from my house (according to mapquest, I've never made the drive). Yes, I'm a Red Sox fan first and foremost, but I've been a Braves fan as well since 1984. I've been to the city only 2 times, have no family from the area and no personal connections to the Braves. None of my family members are Braves fans, so I didn't "inherit" it from a parent or anything. I became a Braves fan for 1 reason. I saw them on TV.

then it should be ok for me to root for the celtics.

BTW, I'm not a hockey fan. No rinks within an hour of us. Kind of hard to play hockey on a frozen corn field.

30. Here let me help you out:
Root for whatever team you like. That's what I do.
It's fast, it's easy and it's okay.

Now as far as WashDC-Balti baseball is concerned, you would also have to root for both the Rangers and Twins since the Washington Senators moved to Minn in 1961. In the following year DC had another team and they eventually moved to Texas and became the Rangers. I think that was in '71.

Oh hell. I think I just added more confusion!

Yeah, it kind of hard not to like Bill Russell, John Havilcek, Dave Cowens, etc. with the Celtics.

Also, who can forget Dandy Don Meredith and Bob Lilly for the Boys, and then there was the hero of the 1960 World Series, Bill Mazeroski (sp).

Shit, I have no idea who played for the indians in the 60's!!

38. I heard a contestant on Jeopardy once refer to it as sports bigamy
I agree with that. I am a Detroit fan through and through. I've had a few other teams I've liked over the years. But even though I live in Seattle now, I have never abandoned my teams (even the Lions) and the Seattle teams likewise did not move upwards in my hierarchy of whom I root for.

Of course, I have a rule of thumb: I only root for the teams that my great-grandfathers cheered for. I realize not everyone has that luxury, but it's worked for me and helps me shut people up who think I should root for Seattle (the city has been on the verge of losing every pro team it's had, and in fact finally did lose one, so what would be the point, anyway?)

I have a very hard time rooting for teams snatched away from the fans, too.

42. Hmmm. Now if I followed your guidelines the following would be my teams.
I think Pittsburgh had a professional baseball team in the latter part of the 1800's. I'll have to ask the "REAL SPORTS FAN" what they think of that idea!!

Football: dne.
Basketball: had not been invented.

Racing: Kentucky Derby.
