Shifting Gears --- I'm going with Dunkirk...
Edited on Thu Apr-30-09 03:22 PM by trumad
Re-watched the Florida Derby and I still think he's quite special.

He had a lot of ground to gain and almost got there against one of the best horses in the country.

4. I did---3 times
And I agree--- he was my first pick---but then they let Dunkirk in and I switched.

I think he'll run at 4-1 or 5-1... Good money on the nose.

9. No kidding!
That horse just came out of nowhere.

Borel had an excellent ride. That guy is some jockey! Last year's Derby, then the filly yesterday, and now the Derby again.

It's great for the Cowboy, too.

11. I'm with you! and Musket Man third!
That reporter was so snide with that trainer on the walk over - what a comeuppance. A $10,000 and a $15,000 colt in the top three. Take that, Sheiks. And it sure looked to me like that horse was legit - he blew past everyone, rail ride or not, he sure looked like he was moving. I would have liked to see General Quarters in there, but this is as good.

12. Yeah, the reporter was treating the trainer like a joke.

Then the cowboy kicks the shit out of all the big shots and exhibits more class than
anyone afterward when he gave credit to the trainer in Canada who had the horse as a two year old.
Think Pletcher would have done that?

http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/50484/woolley-soaking-up-first-derby-experience

“I have really enjoyed everything, and the people here have been great,” Woolley said. “Being in a place like Louisville, everybody including the waiter at the restaurant has his favorite horse. It’s just super ...

"... If your horse runs his best race that day, no matter where you run you have to be happy,” said Woolley. “That’s just the way it is. If he runs first, fifteenth, or last you have to be happy if your horse had his best effort that day.”

on edit, meant to say that I thought that second paragraph was the perfect attitude.

I was trying to remember if Asmussen ever gave Helen Pitts her due with Curlin - I really can't remember. I was very happy to see Einstein win again today - what a versatile horse he is. I "picked" him years ago when I'd never heard of him when I switched on a race as they were loading the gate and saw him walking in - I loved his looks. I followed him ever since. Very happy to see Pitts have such a good horse.

18. No I don't think Pletcher would do that....
0 and 24 now, ain't he? Bwahahahaha!!! Pletcher skunked again, Mullins and IEAH a scratch. A good day for racing. Yesterday's Oaks was unbelievable. RA is the real deal.

Hi Pat!!! At some point, isn't Todd gonna have to explain why he can't win a Derby?

13. Much fun seeing Calvin and Mine that Bird come back to the winner's circle
I have to admit. Mine that Bird was probably the one horse I thought had no chance. Nice to be proven wrong in this event. Amazing rail move!

I'm proud of Pioneerof the Nile. He ran great and took just fine to the dirt for all those naysayers out there in public handicapper land.

19. "Derby has no room for long shots" (Finley column headline May 1)
One of the few wagers I'd actually lay money on is that Finley sure wishes the headline writer had chosen some other point from his column - which to be fair, doesn't say it in quite those absolute, unequivocal, categorical terms. From the last paragraph in his May 1 column:
This doesn't look like a race in which long shots will prevail.

http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/triplecrown09/columns/story?columnist=finley_bill&id=4121548

However, even that strikes me as a dim remark about any Derby.

LOVE this! What a great gesture.

Mine That Bird Team Salutes Barbaro, Offers Roses From Derby Garland to Fans
By John Asher

Kentucky Derby fans who visited Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby Museum on the day after the 135th “Run for the Roses” got a surprise gift from the team behind Mine That Bird, the 50-1 longshot that won America’s greatest race on Saturday.

Trainer Chip Woolley Jr. suggested Sunday morning that the mantle of roses worn by Mine That Bird in the Kentucky Derby Winner’s Circle after his victory be placed on the new sculpture of 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro located at Churchill Downs’ Gate 1 entrance. After consulting with co-owners Mark Allen with Double Eagle Ranch and Dr. Leonard Blach of Bueno Suerte Equine, the trio behind Saturday’s surprise Derby winner decided to give the nearly 400 “Freedom Roses” that make up the garland to Derby fans who were visiting the Barbaro Memorial and the Kentucky Derby Museum on the day after the race.

The garland had been stored in refrigeration overnight in the museum, and at noon (EDT) was briefly placed over the rail of the Barbaro sculpture in tribute to the ill-fated 2006 winner of the Kentucky Derby. The garland was then removed and Woolley and Allen began handing out the roses, one-by-one, to fans who happened by the larger-than-life sculpture as they visited the museum and Churchill Downs.

24. This is how racing needs to treat the fans!
Mullins says we fans should just keep our big mouths shut and quit bitching about what drugs he gives his horses. Chip Woolley hands out roses from the KD garland to the fans.

and to me, this Derby was one of the best.

The sheiks, the big shots and the mega trainers got their asses handed to them by a little
gelding whose connections have more class than the rest of the field combined. I'll savor this
one for a long time.

My favorite account of the race so far: http://www.espn.go.com/sports/horse/triplecrown09/columns/story?id=4129166
