Final section of Tiger Stadium to be demolished.
This is difficult for me to look at.

I can only imagine how our Detroit forum friends feel.

Such history. :(

==================================================================================

The city was dissatisfied with the conservancy group's proposal to restore the last piece of Tiger Stadium and develop the area around it. :wtf:

DETROIT -- What remains of historic Tiger Stadium will be demolished after the city rejected a $33.4 million proposal by a nonprofit group to preserve and renovate the old ballpark.

The Economic Development Corp. board voted 7-1 on Tuesday to authorize the complete demolition of the stadium.

Detroit Economic Growth Corp. vice president Waymon Guillebeaux said the stadium will be leveled as soon as a contract is negotiated with a contractor.

"We cannot have a partially demolished building remaining indefinitely," Guillebeaux told The Associated Press.

Gary Gillette, a leader of the group trying to save the stadium, blasted the vote as "shortsighted" and vowed to fight.

"We are obviously going to do everything we can -- including calling on all of our friends and supporters -- to try to get this decision reversed," said Gillette, board member and secretary of the Old Tiger Stadium Conservancy.

Tiger Stadium opened in 1912 as Navin Field. The Detroit Tigers departed for nearby Comerica Park after the 1999 season.

The first demolition began at the end of June 2008, and much of the stadium was torn down by fall.

But the Detroit City Council voted 5-3 last October to spare -- for the time being -- the remaining wedge of ballpark in the city's Corktown neighborhood. Council members said at the time they wanted to give the Old Tiger Stadium Conservancy more time to raise funds for a proposed redevelopment of the site.

The group submitted a plan this year to renovate the stadium into a commercial building, with a working ballfield for youth and amateur baseball. The project had an estimated price tag of $33.4 million, much of which would be covered by historical and other tax credits. A $3.8 million federal earmark also was approved for the project.

"In terms of some of their plans, they met our approval," Guillebeaux said. "The biggest issue was the funding. There were some matters as to how they were going to fund it, whether they were going to receive certain tax credits. ... It was the financial milestones largely that had not been met."

Guillebeaux said the conservancy's plan relied on proposals to raise funding rather than money, loans and credits already in hand. He noted the group was given several extensions on deadlines last fall and this spring.

Messages seeking comment were left with conservancy officials.

1. Not good. I saw my first game there with my dad.
It was such a big deal. Neither of us will ever forget it. I bought the tickets for us for Father's Day when I was really young (with the help of my mom).

Final: Tigers 2, Baltimore 1.

I saw Trammell play there, I saw the Bird.......it was a great place. Even when I went there its last year, it still had its charm, despite the fact they hadn't updated it in a while. It was very homey and cosy - had a real Fenway feel to it (they opened the same day).

2. When I made my trip through Detroit in the late 90's, I was there when the
Tigers were on the road. I was so sad.

But I distracted one of the security guards and got inside just to take a look.

I wanted to see the infamous beams. Wow.

Did I tell you I also sneaked into the Silverdome?

It was in the summer so no football, but I followed someone in acting like I knew what I was doing and got to see the place.

Didn't get inside the Palace, but that was a nice swing through Detroit.

3. Comerica's okay, but the sightlines aren't as good
You are much farther away from the action. The last game I went to at The Corner, we were in the so-called 400 level, yet were practically on top of the action. It was a funny game. Every time I went to the ladies room, the Tigers hit a home run. It got to be humorous. I'd walk in the stall, sit down, and hear the crack of the bat, and loud cheering! My friends started shooing me back in. I also sat next to a really nice lady from Windsor who gave me a tip about changing US money in Canada - she told us to take it directly into a bank in a small town. My mother did this a few days later and came out with so much money she couldn't spend it all.

I have some good memories there. I went to a game the first day the Illitches bought the club. Everywhere, Domino's signs were covered up with makeshift Little Caesar's signs, and everyone was eating Little Caesar's pizza! That was funny.

4. HOW WOULD YOU KNOW HISTORY, KOBY4???
:wtf:

If you were a REAL SPORTS FAN, you would revile the SF Giants, as the TRUE and REAL fans of the Giants do. Of course maybe that explains your fetish with Bonds.

Douche!

6. As i said, Koby4, you do not understand history.
You are rooting for a team that abandoned their fans.

PITTSBURGH NEVER DID THAT TO THEIR FANS!

7. I will agree with you about one thing. Pittsburgh never abandoned its fans.
To be clear, the fans abandoned Pittsburgh.

"Pirates.... sitting deep in attendance cellar"
Via The Biz of Baseball has a quick analysis of Pittsburgh Pirates attendance thus far this season:

The Pirates are an interesting case to look at. In 2008, up to May 21, six of 21 games at PNC Park (they had one rainout on 5/12) saw attendance below 10,000 (9,735 on 4/9 and 9,798 on 4/10 against the Cubs, 8,444 on 4/21 against the Marlins, 9,544 on 4/24 against the Cardinals, 9,788 on 5/7 against the Giants, and 8,805 on 5/21 against the Brewers). In 2009, they see four games with attendance below 10,000 (8,790 on 4/20 and 9,917 on 4/21 against the Marlins; and 8,482 on 5/4 and 9,775 on 5/5 against the Brewers). However, attendance is pretty much flat compared to last season (down 0.28 percent compared to last season), which sadly means with Florida and Tampa Bay increasing attendance, the Pirates well sitting deep in the attendance cellar.

:wow:

WHAT A DISGRACE.

8. Unfortunately, douche, it is industry who is taking all of the
Union jobs overseas that is the problem.

That, my friend, is a DISGRACE. The bread and butter folks are leaving because of the greed of corporations, which it appears you support.

That makes you an asshole!

11. You are getting so confused by all of your posts. Seriously .. from false
information about population to acting like a baby about how it's all the economy's fault for the Pirates drawing 8,000 a game .... you just don't know when to stop before you embarrass yourself even more.

13. I sat in the President's Box in Tiger Stadium
I worked in PR at Domino's in the late 80s, when Tom Monaghan owned the team, and offices could sign out the PB if it wasn't in use. Special gold tickets, a private elevator, and I got to meet Al Kaline and George Kell. I'll never forget it.
