Shame on Jerry Jones -- Quality of Cowboys 'tent' doubted post-collapse

Associated Press

IRVING, Texas -- A series of text messages from city officials after the Dallas Cowboys practice facility collapsed reveal concerns about the structure's quality and suggest the team "pushes" things through and receives preferential treatment.

The day after the facility collapsed last month, Irving City Manager Tommy Gonzalez referred to it as "a big ole tent" that "probably never was structurally sound enough" to hold up against straight-line winds.

The Cowboys' tentlike practice facility collapsed May 2, paralyzing scouting assistant Rich Behm and injuring 11 others.

Gonzalez characterized the Cowboys as a team that "pushes" its projects through the city bureaucracy. He wrote in a text message to another city official that "it was for 'the cowboys' ... that's just what my gut tells me."

The Dallas Morning News reported the story in its Wednesday edition, using state open records laws to obtain the text messages. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and a team spokesman declined to comment to the newspaper.

The team did not immediately return a call to The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Gonzalez sent a text message to Brenda McDonald, the city's real estate and development director, saying he was confident proper permitting and inspection procedures were followed, but added that he also knows "how the D org pushes things thru."

McDonald responded: "We experienced that 'push' this spring on a stairway up to the new temporary observation booth that they constructed in Valley Ranch. It is a model of the suites at the new stadium."

City Council member Beth Van Duyne said there is a perception that the Cowboys and Jones get whatever they want, and that the council's cooperation with the organization filters down to city employees.

"The council may have allowed their adoration of the Cowboys franchise impact their decision," Van Duyne said. "If we're willing to make those kinds of concessions at the council level, that's sending a solid and clear message to staff."

Irving Mayor Herbert Gears said the Cowboys do not receive preferential treatment.

"That's not something anybody would admit, but certainly it's not true, either," Gears said.

Gonzalez denied that his text messages show the team is treated differently from any other Irving business.

"Any organization we work with always wants to make sure that they can get their projects accomplished," Gonzalez said. "We treat every organization the same, and I was reinforcing that to the staff."

1. It's called expediting. Most large companies have someone that
specifically does this. Interestingly, there are lot of older guys who have been in construction a long times, that are able to curry favors and get the inspectors in much quicker that other guys. That appears to be what happened and what the "official" is saying. It is the way the industry works.

Also note that the comment is coming from a city manager who is not a qualified inspector. Then he says that proper permitting and inspection procedures were followed. If that is the case, then it sounds like the city is at fault and not the Cowboys.

2. Not to say the Cowboys are necessarily worse than any other team
would be in this situation, we do have the Irving city manager on record: "...Gonzalez characterized the Cowboys as a team that "pushes" its projects through the city bureaucracy."

And if you want to dismiss Gonzalez, you have someone else with the city blasting the organization, "City Council member Beth Van Duyne said there is a perception that the Cowboys and Jones get whatever they want, and that the council's cooperation with the organization filters down to city employees."

Stop sticking up for a rich owners.

I'm not the least bit hesitant to blast my team owners.

3. Dude! As usual you missed the entire point of my post and even the point
of the artical.

There are two issues here.

One is the expediting of inspections. Not just team owners, but most wealthy developers/GC's/etc. can call in an inspector very quickly. Yeah, for the guy building a house, he'll be at the end of the line, always.

Two is the quality of the inspection. Jerry Jones did not do the inspections just as the York family will not do an inspections. If Jones or anyone else "paid" the inspector to pass the work done, then that is an issue. But nowhere in the article does it say that. If the inspector did shoddy work without getting paid off, then he and the city are liable.

4. I understand. I'm saying I believe Jones had a hand in expediting things
along.

And it would totally be in some asshole rich guy's nature to (Jones) to cut corners. Obviously the city council has serious concerns.

BTW, paying off someone does not have to come into play. I'm not saying he paid anyone off, but ...

5. If there is any shame it would be the city officials that failed to do their job
