I know its early to talk college football but...
I was having a discussion with a ND fan friend of mine and he explained to be that they will be in a BCS game based on their schedule this year. Here is the schedule, I know they get an automatic BCS bid with a certain combination of win total/BCS standings. What will be ND's record and will they be in a BCS game?

September 5 Nevada (W)
September 12 at Michigan (W)
September 19 Michigan State (L)
September 26 at Purdue (W)
October 3 Washington (W)
October 17 USC (L)
October 24 Boston College (W?)
October 31 Washington State (W)
November 7 Navy (W)
November 14 at Pittsburgh (L)
November 21 Connecticut (W)
November 28 at Stanford (W)

1. Three losses, minimum.
Losses against Michigan, Michigan State, USC, and Pitt will provide at least three maybe four losses.

Then they will find a way to lose against some of the other cupcakes.

ND is AFRAID to go to a conference like the Big 10 where they are guaranteed to get the shit kicked out of them every year.

4. They always lose to BC
Edited on Wed Jun-10-09 09:35 PM by Condem
My fondest memories of my dead father. Getting beyond angry when they lost to BC. Man, he'd get pissed. Last time I saw him. They lost to BC. 05? We almost got in a fistfight. A Field Of Dreams moment. I Called ND the most overrated school in the history of universities. That Alabama grad got up to hit me. In my house. Left Iowa City the next day, east. Never talked to him again. I fucking hate ND.

7. ND is the MOST over-rated school in the NCAA. I'm in total agreement with
you there. All it took was a few "so-called" legends and the mass-sports-media just can't let it go.

they might win one of the 2 away games with Michigan and Purdue but not both.

11. Absolutely. Too much talent, there.
Top 25? Doubt it. We've got 'em here October 10th. Night game, national TV. Look forward to it, Upton. They should make a Bowl. Be very surprised if the Wolves don't.

13. Ahh. A Hawkeye! You think they can beat UM?? I'd like to see it!
Yeah, the overgrown WEASELS will probably make a bowl game this year.

Hopefully the Buckeyes will make sure they WEASELS will play in the Blue Bonnet Bowl!

The Buckeyes at Columbus in the penultimate game of the season? That's another question. We never play well there.

16. Sure a new coach, but not a mystery. He was an assistant that was named to take over
years in advance.

8. ND could win 7, though they could win four or eight, also. No one really
fucking knows what Weis has there and if he can actually coach a team to a winning record.

12. They've got 5 sure wins
Nevada, UW, WSU, Navy and Stanford...though they usually have a struggle in Palo Alto but end up winning.

What happens to you and cboy, if Nick Montana ends up starting for the Cowboys after Romo retires and takes the Cowboys to another Super Bowl Championship?

15. They're a long shot for the BCS--most of those teams were better than the Irish last year
so it's certainly no gimme that ND will beat them this year. Nevada, for instance, was 7-6 just like Notre Dame, and they've got a good running back who is coming back this year. Notre Dame might beat them, but it's hardly a gimme at this point. Neither is Connecticut Navy, or Stanford.

Everyone talks about the great recruiting classes that Notre Dame has had, and as much as people sometimes like to downplay recruiting, talent certainly matters. But you have to develop and make good use of talent, not just get it on campus. Last year Notre Dame beat only one team with a winning record (Navy), and the six other teams they beat had a total of 13 wins between them.

As to the BCS, Notre Dame is guaranteed a spot if they're in the top 8 of the BCS. But to be eligible for an at-large bid, a team has to (a) have 9 wins and (b) be in the top 14.

I think they'll lose the three you've listed as losses, and I think they'll likely beat Michigan, Purdue, Washington, Washington State.

That makes them 4-3.

If they win the other five games (Nevada, BC, Navy, Connecticut, and Stanford) then they'd be 9-3, which would put them on the fringes of a BCS bid. Last year the highest-ranked BCS team with 3 losses was Oklahoma State at #13, so a 3-loss ND team may or may not be eligible, but certainly wouldn't be a lock.

I don't think they'll win all five, though. I think they'll lose at least one of those, probably two, and possibly three.

Oh, how I miss college football. Less than three months left to wait :woohoo:

Truer words were never spoken. Every GD year you keep hearing about the "top-5" recruting class Charlie the Gunt has. However, you don't see that translating into wins or 1st day NFL draft talent. Charlie-ate-the-Chocolate-Factory is one of the worst xs and os coaches I have ever seen and he makes those kids go for it all the time on 4th down and puts them behind the 8-ball.

PS: Jamarcus Russell should send Charlie a Christmas Card every year for getting him his overrated status in the NFL draft.

23. This is an undefeated schedule if they play half-way above mediocrity and
have a decent coach. First part is possible, second part isn't...another 6-5 year.
