Anyone here write satire/humor?
Edited on Wed May-14-08 01:32 PM by hiaasenrocks
It's tough, since humor is such a subjective thing, but it's really what I prefer to write. Even if some people don't like it, it's just me, and you have to write what/who you are, I guess. I write humor/satire columns for a local paper and I have a blog as well that contains my columns and some "semi-daily" entries along the same lines. Also working on my first novel. I'm wondering who else here might be into the same type of writing. Thanks!

1. I wrote and published a satirical novel
That I think is the best thing I ever wrote. It was certainly the most fun to write of anything I wrote. Huge numbers of readers ... ignored it. But I'm still proud of it and (obviously) boost it every chance I get.

You can read about it here: http://www.dvorkin.com/bizstars

2. I often write humorous pieces, but only unintentionally.
That's why I edit compulsively and solicit brutal critics as
readers.

novel now. I love reading Janet Evanovich, Mary Kay Andrews, and Carl Hiaasen, so I have been bitten by the "humor bug":D I finished a screenplay last summer (of course I'm still editing it thanks to my addiction to the Democratic primaries) and while it was a drama genre, it had simple humor in it in the pivotal spots.

But this crime series I'm writing now is just pure fun. I've put it on the back burner with the primaries and all, but now that summer is here and we have a nominee, I'm trying to get back in the groove of writing (that's why I'm here:D

So, to answer your question, yes, I write humor and I'm loving it! What are you working on now?

4. I recently wrote some short Onion-type pieces for fun.
And the novel I'm writing right now is not humor, per se, but has some darkly humorous elements in it.

5. I used to write humor columns and got a couple published.
One was published in The Boston Globe. I stopped doing it when publications started making freelancers sign contracts giving them all rights to your articles, including those previously published. And I also had a huge computer crash and lost lots of pieces I was working on. I got frustrated and never got back to that writing.

6. I ghostwrite a computer column
Specifically about how to create decent Web sites. The topic can be really dry, and the people I ghostwrite for can be pains in the arse, so to make it palatable for readers and for myself, I let my freak flag fly with the first column and kept it up in subsequent ones. Our readers seem to enjoy it. People tell me I have a distinctive "voice" when I turn on the funny--goofy, loose. So even though two other names are on the computer column, it's all me. :D
