Women who had any means at all were often checked into hospitals for "D&C," which was a common procedure for fibroids, who was to know they got a fetus with the fibroids? What we do know is that procedure is far less common now.
Women who died from massive infections following septic abortion were listed as having died from infection.
Women who died from uterine puncture and masssive blood loss were listed as having died from internal injuries.
Women who committed suicide rather than carry a pregnancy to term were simply listed as suicides.
There is a great deal of male denial about what an unwanted pregnancy means to women and there always has been. In the late 60s and early 70s, though, the main people backing legalized abortion were clerty who had seen women parishoners sickened, maimed, and dead from the horror of unwanted pregnancy.
On edit: contrast these sets of statistics:
http://abort73.com/HTML/III-C-2-illegal.htmlhttp://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/ss5309a1.htmThe operative phrase in the latter is, "No deaths were associated with known illegal abortion. ... Morbidity and Mortality Weekly "
A deeper search can be obtained by googling "abortion morbidity and mortality." That will turn up international stats from countries where abortion is still illegal, and it's a horror show. It's not for the faint hearted.
