Need Links and Statistics--Pre-Roe Abortion Death and Abortion Rates
I need links and statistics to club an anti-abortion zealot over the head. I need a site with links to the death rates for botched illegal abortions from back in the 1940's and 1950's. as well as the abortion rates BEFORE abortion laws began to be liberalized back in the 1960's.

I doubt that such statistics will do much to wise up the zealot, but I think that some bystanders who still have some sense of skepticism and rationality might be forced to think.

Please post such links on the board.

Thank you.

2. Unfortunately, all the stats are estimates

Women who had any means at all were often checked into hospitals for "D&C," which was a common procedure for fibroids, who was to know they got a fetus with the fibroids? What we do know is that procedure is far less common now.

Women who died from massive infections following septic abortion were listed as having died from infection.

Women who died from uterine puncture and masssive blood loss were listed as having died from internal injuries.

Women who committed suicide rather than carry a pregnancy to term were simply listed as suicides.

There is a great deal of male denial about what an unwanted pregnancy means to women and there always has been. In the late 60s and early 70s, though, the main people backing legalized abortion were clerty who had seen women parishoners sickened, maimed, and dead from the horror of unwanted pregnancy.

On edit: contrast these sets of statistics:

http://abort73.com/HTML/III-C-2-illegal.html

http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/ss5309a1.htm

The operative phrase in the latter is, "No deaths were associated with known illegal abortion. ... Morbidity and Mortality Weekly "

A deeper search can be obtained by googling "abortion morbidity and mortality." That will turn up international stats from countries where abortion is still illegal, and it's a horror show. It's not for the faint hearted.

3. My Aunt in 1945
Had a D&C for a "Therapeutic" Abortion. As you said, money talked. She paid her own OB/GYN, who she had been using for 20+ years), to say her "heart condition" could result in her death if she carried a pregnancy to term.

From what she told me, this was common among middle class married women at that time. No, you didn't need to be rich, just have a sympathetic doctor and some extra cash on hand.

4. My Mom In 1963
Her parents had a friend who had a friend in Tampa's Cuban community.
Her parents couldn't come with her though, because the doctor didn't want anyone to know where he performed abortions. It cost them a lot of money, they were middle class, but they scraped it together.

Mom said they were very nice, clean and gave her something for pain. But she was terrified and wished her mother could have been there. She also said she was very lucky to have had "good" people doing it, and that it shouldn't be a crap shoot for women.

My step-father's sister on the other hand, got pregnant at 15 and her boyfriend's mother knew some one with knitting needles...
