Judge OKs 'Choose Life' License Plates (Illinois)
Judge OKs 'Choose Life' License Plates

By MIKE ROBINSON
The Associated Press
Monday, January 22, 2007; 10:12 PM

CHICAGO -- A federal judge ordered state officials Monday to offer license plates
with the motto "Choose Life," saying that the message, considered by some to be
anti-abortion, is protected by the First Amendment.

U.S. District Judge David H. Coar said the state must issue the plate as long as
sponsors of the idea can meet certain numerical and design requirements.

A group called Choose Life Illinois Inc., made up largely of adoption advocates,
tried in vain for several years to get legislative approval for the plates before
suing in 2004.

The secretary of state's office, which issues 60 kinds of specialty license plates
to Illinois motorists, plans to appeal. It argues that there must be legislative
approval before it can issue any kind of specialty license plates.

1. Nice. Co-opting the word "choose" when they really mean: No Choice.

2. I don't really care. My specialty plate supporte wildlife, and
theother one I was considering was aspay or neiter your pet plate.

Ifsomeone wants to put chose life on their car and drive around all the time with it, who cares?

4. There was another state who prompted this same dicussion.
What it boils down to, is that "choose life" implies there is a choice. This particular driver wants you to "choose life".
As dumb as it sounds, this license plate doesn't violate any laws or constitutional rights.

I just hope these "vanity license plates" bring in some $$$ to the states.

But Florida rejected the one that said said womans choice. It's not a vanity plate. it's a political one!

9. When the plates were issued
in Colorado, they were supposed to be in support of the survivors of the Columbine shootings (they even put a columbine on the plate).

It very soon became clear that they were really supporting anti-choice, but by then there was little we could do.

If they have those plates, then they should offer a "Choose Choice" plate for the other side, JMO
